Located at 30 km from Jaisalmer in the Thar desert, our camp is quiet and peaceful, the stars are sparkling in the night! The camp is managed and run by locals from Damodra Village. We love sharing our culture and traditions with our guests and volunteers. While most of us speak English fairly well, we need help with written English. Our volunteers can help with answering our emails and dealing with calls from potential guests. For volunteers who would like to put in some physical work, you can always help with our general camp maintenance (dishes, cleaning, garbage recycling…). For those who are interested in learning other skills, such as cooking Rajasthani food, we can arrange for that as well! We have some local musicians that perform in the evenings, if you are a musician yourself, they would be more than happy to share their knowledge with you. Perhaps they can teach you to play our traditional Indian instruments. For a few hours of work a day, we can provide accommodation in our Swiss tents and 3 meals a day, but beyond this, live and work daily with us can give you another view of Rajasthan.

APPLY NOW APRIL/JUNE 2013, FULLY BOOKED. AUGUST/OCTOBER 2013, APPLY NOW. 2013 SEASON - FIVE CALENDER MONTHS ONLY: April 1st until June 30th, then August 15th until October 15th. PLEASE TAKE NOTE: We do not host volunteers outside the above-written five calender months so please DO NOT apply for Jan, Feb, Mar, Jul, Nov, Dec :) Whilst our minimum age requirement is flexible, experience of the past two years has led us to give preference to volunteers 24/25 years of age and above. Critical to a volunteer's chances of being selected is how complete the Workawayer profile is - we look for key words and relevant skills, matching travel dates and PHOTOS. Our guests are mostly Indian families, therefore 'normal' and conservative (with regard to clothing) photos work for us. And even more important - how well a volunteer has read/studied the info contained in our Host listing - this will become crystal clear in the first volunteer email enquiry we receive and it is pretty much that first email whereby a volunteer's chances are determined. We introduce our volunteers as 'co-hosts,' being on hand to interact with guests, who being mostly Indian families, love the opportunity to meet travellers from other countries. Activities include assisting in the check-in/registration procedure, accompanying guests on orchard and forest walks, sharing meals times - meaning you'll eat well three times a day! We are looking for physically fit volunteers who love walking/hiking in the mountains as well as possessing a genuine interest in meeting and greeting people. As a reward you'll receive heartfelt invitations from guests to visit them in their homes all over India upon completing your volunteering The Orchard Retreat is part of the Banjara Camps and Retreats group, we place volunteers at the Orchard Retreat in Thanedhar and at our Sangla and Sojha properties, all situated in Himichal Pradesh. Thanedhar: (2400 metres) unfolds as a magnificent panorama of mountains, the slopes covered with pine forests or apple & cherry orchards. Nestled amongst the apple blossoms is the Banjara Orchard Retreat – a getaway that will enchant nature lovers. Please note: there is a climb of 93 steps from the retreat to the road, volunteers can expect to make the return climb two to three times daily. Sojha: (2683 metres) With unending slopes of emerald forests this is isolated nature at its most alluring. The Retreat is a solid cedar wood house surrounded by thickly wooded forests from which you get a panoramic view of the snow covered Himalayan ranges in the distance. Please note: there is a climb of 137 steps from the retreat to the road, volunteers can expect to make the return climb two to three times daily. Sangla: (2740 metres) For six months every year, the Himalayan valleys of Kinnaur and Spiti emerge from a thick cloak of snow to reveal a different, secret world. Your discovery of the lesser-known Himalayas can begin at the Banjara Camp in the Sangla Valley, surrounded by towering mountains on all sides and set on the banks of the Baspa river that surges through the valley. Please note: to volunteer here you need to be physically strong and capable of daily hikes of some endurance. Nights will be cool and your accommodation basic.
