Description
We are a family of three who live in Puyo, Ecuador and come from agricultural roots. Our names are Lupe, Pato and Heberth. Puyo is a town of 36,000 inhabitants and is located in the Amazon rainforest in Ecuador.

We started a project some ten years ago with a focus on the reforestation of the Amazon rainforest surrounding our town. We seeded many areas with native species in order to create forest food. Our efforts in creating a sustainable environment and our project will permit us to have a harmonious coexistence with the local fauna and animals. Through the years we witnessed the recolonization of birds, frogs, reptiles and small mammals. We are delighted to coexist with nature and share our home with the fruits of our efforts.

We are inspired by our efforts to date and, in the course of our project, we combine it with the cosmovision of the indigenous people of Puyo. Our project is being sustained thanks to the help of volunteers from all over the world who offer their time and services. We share our home in the middle of nature and volunteers have the opportunity to participate in our family life. Furthermore they will be able to learn and gain practical experience around the work that we do. Volunteers will connect with nature, nurturing it and experience the rewards of taking care of it through their day-to-day experiences.

Somos una familia de tres que vivimos en Puyo, Ecuador y venimos de raíces agrícolas. Nuestros nombres son Lupe, Pato y Heberth. Puyo es un pueblo de 36.000 habitantes y está ubicado en la selva amazónica de Ecuador.

Comenzamos un proyecto hace unos diez años con un enfoque en la reforestación de la selva amazónica que rodea a nuestra ciudad. Sembramos muchas áreas con especies nativas para crear alimento del bosque. Nuestros esfuerzos en la creación de un entorno sostenible y nuestro proyecto nos permitirá tener una convivencia armoniosa con la fauna y los animales locales. A través de los años fuimos testigos de la recolonización de aves, ranas, reptiles y pequeños mamíferos. Estamos encantados de convivir con la naturaleza y compartir nuestro hogar con los frutos de nuestro esfuerzo.

Nos inspiramos en nuestro esfuerzo hasta la fecha y, en el transcurso de nuestro proyecto, lo combinamos con la cosmovisión de los pueblos indígenas de Puyo. Nuestro proyecto se sostiene gracias a la ayuda de voluntarios de todo el mundo que ofrecen su tiempo y servicios. Compartimos nuestro hogar en medio de la naturaleza y los voluntarios tienen la oportunidad de participar en nuestra vida familiar. Además, podrán aprender y adquirir experiencia práctica en torno al trabajo que realizamos. Los voluntarios se conectarán con la naturaleza, la nutrirán y experimentarán las recompensas de cuidarla a través de sus experiencias diarias.

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
The project is focused on natural people, biology students, nature lovers, wildlife photographers and among others who like to explore and discover Amazonian biodiversity.

They will have a nice enriching experience learning to work with typical farm tools such as the machete, garabato, shovel, hoe, etc. In addition to practices in general biology, ornithology, herpetology, botany, etc. In addition to cultural exchange.

You will also share life in the Amazon.

You will have ecological trails to walk and meditate.

You will enjoy a tropical climate.

You will be able to learn about the use of plants for the preparation of typical dishes such as Maito, volquetero, chicha de yuca, chontacuro and the biodiversity of Amazonian fruits.

You can visit beautiful places such as the indigenous communities, giant swings of the Pastaza River.

Volunteers will be able to have fruits and medicinal plants around the volunteer area such as: guava, naranjilla, mandarin lemon, lemon verbena, hot pepper.

We have links with indigenous communities in the interior for cultural exchange.

El proyecto esta enfocado a personas naturales, estudiantes de biología, apasionados de la naturaleza, fotógrafos wildlife y entre otros que gusten de explorar y descubrir la biodiversidad amazónica.

Tendrán una linda experiencia enriquecedora aprendiendo a trabajar con herramientas típicas del campo como el machete, garabato, pala, azadon, etc. Además de practicas en biología general sobre, ornitologia, herpetologia, botanica, etc. además de Intercambio cultural.

También pondrás compartir la vida en el amazonas.

Tendrás senderos ecológicos para caminar y meditar.

Disfrutaras del un clima tropical .

Podrás conocer sobre el uso de las plantas para la preparación de platos típicos como es el Maito, volquetero, chicha de yuca, chontacuro y la biodiversidad de frutas amazónicas.

Podrás visitar lugares hermosos como son las comunidad Indígenas, columpios gigantes del río Pastaza.

Los voluntarios podrán disponer de frutas y plantas medicinales alrededor de la zona de voluntarios como son: guayaba, naranjilla, limón mandarina, hierba luisa, ají picante.

Thanks to these tasks we are managing to reforest with species such as: guava, cocoa, cinnamon, banana, papaya, arazá, pineapple, cane, lemon, naranjilla and hot pepper. In addition, we have medicinal plants such as the natural repellent and regenerator called Sangre de Drago, lemon verbena, churuyuyo, sour cane, pedorrera, natural ampicillin, among others.
Also Amazonian palm trees such as chontaduro, chonta panbil, chonta kilo, chonta corozo among others

Los mingas voluntarias se desarrollan durante 4 horas al día, en el horario de 8am a 12:00 pm de Lunes a Viernes.

Tareas diarias:

* Bioconstrucción.
* Reforestación de bosques con especies nativas forestales.
* Limpieza y siembra de plantas destinadas alimentar la fauna local.
*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ Seguimiento, cuidado y mantenimiento de plántulas, árboles y arbustos.
* Practicas biológicas en muestreo de aves y anfibios.
* En ocasiones trabajo de laboratorio.

Gracias a estas tareas estamos logrando reforestar con especies como: guayaba, cacao, canela, plátano, papaya, arazá, piña, caña, limón, naranjilla y ají picante. Además, tenemos plantas medicinales como el repelente y regenerador natural llamado sangre de drago, hierba luisa, churuyuyo, caña agria, pedorrera, ampicilina natural entre otros.
Tambien palmeras amazonicas como son chontaduro, chonta panbil, chonta kilo, chonta corozo entre otros.

You can hear that the Amazon is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet, but it is something else entirely when you are walking the trails at Finca la Argentina and can see hundreds of distinct, magnificent species surrounding you! This is a fantastic place to experience a true wonder. Also, I felt so welcomed and taken care of while… read more staying there. Not to mention that Lupe is super knowledgeable about medicinal plants and Pato has a wealth of knowledge about the biology of the area! They are both very generous in sharing what they know. And there’s lots to explore nearby!

I recommend getting a bolón and an emborrajado at Las Delicias de Doña Esperanza (see picture), going to Mirador Indichuris and a nearby waterfall, visiting communities outside of Puyo (as well as spending some time walking around in the city itself!), and taking a day trip to Misahuallí to go tubing and hang by the beach. If you’re interested in going to church while there, I recommend Iglesia Ágape (about 10 min away by taxi)–the people there are super welcoming :) This is a great trip to combine with a partner organization in Otavalo (ask Lupe for info!)

If you have any questions about my experience don’t hesitate to contact me!

**I recommend not buying waterproof boots if you are low on space and will only use them here! Boots are absolutely necessary, but they are easy to get in Puyo and there are many pairs available at the Finca. I left boots in a women’s 9.5W.

Uno puede oír que la Amazonia es uno de los lugares más biodiversos en todo el planeta, pero es algo diferente cuando estás caminado por los senderos en Finca la Argentina y puede ver dientes de distintos especies maravillosos que te rodean! Esto es un lugar fantástico para experimentar una maravilla verdadera. También, me sentía muy bienvenida y apoyada durante mi tiempo en la Finca. Además, Lupe y Pato tienen una riqueza de conocimiento con respeto a las plantas medicinales y la biología del área. Son muy generosos en compartir lo que saben. Y hay mucho para explorar cerquita!

Les recomiendo comer un bolón y un emborrajado en “Las Delicias de Doña Esperanza,” ir al Mirador Indichuris y a una cascada cerca, visitar comunidades justo afuera del Puyo (y caminar por las calles de Puyo mismo! Les dejaré el número de una guía), y viajar por el día a Misahuallí para hacer tubing y ir a la playa. Se te interesa ir a una iglesia, les recomiendo Iglesia Ágape (10 minutos de la Finca por taxi)—la gente allí es muy amable! Una estancia en Finca la Argentina es perfecta para combinar con una organización afiliada en Otavalo, donde hay un clima muy diferente (pregúntale a Lupe por mas información).

Si tiene cualquier duda, no hesites en contactarme!

**Te recomiendo NO COMPRAR BOTAS si solamente las vas a usar mientras que estés en la finca y no tienes mucho espacio en tu equipaje. Es fácil comprar botas en el Puyo, y hay muchas ya en la finca. Yo dejé botas en tamaño 9.5W.

I stayed there for 2 weeks and helped mostly with identifying plants in the forests, which they're doing both for biology research purposes and for future reforestation projects.

Lupe, Pato, and their whole family are incredibly nice and are wonderful hosts. Lupe would take us to the market every… read more Sunday to buy food for the week, and she gave us great suggestions of day-trips to do on weekends or small outings to do during the week. She would even help us organize the trips, such as by calling taxis for us, or things like that.

Pato really lives and breathes the projects at the Finca. He is so passionate and knowledgeable about the work and the mission at the Finca, and it was a pleasure to work with him and contribute to the projects. He also has a growing number of connections with students at the local university in Puyo (Universidad Estatal Amazonica). We had the opportunity to meet many of the students, and go on night walks with them into the forest to find frogs and different insects, which the students do either to learn or to help with different research projects. It was so cool helping them learn (and also learn ourselves!) about the incredible diversity in these Amazonian forests! Although this was probably uncommon, we also had the opportunity to attend a small fair at the university, which the Finca was taking part in. It was awesome seeing all the interest of the local students in the Finca's work, but in addition, we also had the chance to see some presentations by other students, professors, and local indigenous leaders about issues related to the Amazon and climate change, which was incredibly interesting and unique!

In general, Lupe and Pato are very welcoming, kind, and hospitable, and in addition to our volunteer work, I really valued just talking to them over breakfast or dinner, learning about their lives and life experiences, and sharing in their passion for conservation and learning. They really do everything they can to make you feel comfortable, cared for, and like you are a part of the family. Their food is delicious, and you can ask them anything or help them out with cooking or other chores if you'd like.

One thing to note is that they speak mainly Spanish, so having a basic grasp of Spanish or ideally being conversational will go a long way. Another note is that the actual cost to stay at the Finca is more than $5 like it says on Workaway. However all the costs of the volunteer fees go into the projects and helping to support the Finca and the family. Even though they are a conservation project, they don't get any funding from the Ecuadorian government and still have to pay full property tax for all of their land, so the money you pay is going to a good cause.

Overall, my experience at the Finca really enriched my time in Ecuador and I'm extremely grateful for the time I spent there. I'd definitely recommend volunteering with them and, personally, I would go back in a heartbeat!

I felt at home from the very second I walked in. Lupe has a truly sincere and loving heart. Her presence is so beautifully relaxing. She is also very very knowledgeable in the plant medicine of their land and the Amazon region. I was so grateful for all she taught me… read more about. When I got sick, she made me natural medicinal tea from plants of the land and used a medicinal tincture on my scalp. Pato is also so wonderful. He is very knowledgeable about the Amazon rainforest, especially in his knowledge of birds, frogs, and snakes. He took me on some amazing hikes to waterfalls and rivers. He is typically the person you work with during the day.

The work isn't too hard. I typically worked 4-5 days a week from 8 or 9 to 12. My jobs while there were focused on maintaining and creating new trails. The property is absolutely beautiful. Monkeys, birds and other animals everywhere (including some really cool ants). Feeding the monkeys was one of the best parts :)

The food is good. Lupe and Pato are good cooks. They cook a lot of delicious traditional Ecuadorian dishes. I even tried some interesting dishes like intestine, liver, a whole fish (including eyes) but these arent mandatory haha. I loved cooking with Lupe and learning how to make their traditional dishes.

There is definitely a lot of free time so bring things to entertain you like books, art, etc. Or go enjoy the many walking trails. This also gives you freedom if you want to do excursions or adventures after you finish work or during the weekends.

I got to stay with Lupe, Pato, and their family in their house and stayed in a comfortable room with basic accommodations. There is a shower with cold water (not bad during the hot day, also an option to boil water for bathing), toilet, full kitchen, living space/porch, and a washing board for clothes. I felt extremely safe here! There honestly wasn't a moment in my three weeks that I felt unsafe and I am a very cautious person. The whole family is very respectful. I came alone but it would also be very fun to come with someone else!

I connected with one of Pato's friends and got to go deeper into the Amazon which was a super cool.

No se donde empezar! Una experiencia TAN linda. La familia es hermosa y sientes como parte de su comunidad viviendo en la finca. Chicxs muy trabajadoras. siempre ayudando en todo que se pueda. Trabajaron muy duro terminaron de construir la cocina de los futuros voluntarios.
Dijo que se va a quedar una semana y al final se quedo un mes.

Son muy lindas la Familia! Me quede 3 semanas trabajando y viviendo con ellos. El trabajo es bien interesante; vas a aprender mucho de construciones y plantas! Trabajamos lunes hasta viernes durante la manana. El fin de semana estas libre para conocer Puyo, Tena o Banos, las ciudades mas cercanas.
