Area: CanterburyGreeting We are two professional adults who work full time and love our animals. Our 6 acre property has chickens, alpacas, dogs and one blind kuni kuni pig, along with a mini guide pig. We are currently making over the property and establishing an eco friendly environment for ourselves and our animals. We aim to become as self sufficent as possible and enjoy every minute of every day! Come and visit our little slice of farm paradise only minutes from the city. You need to be pretty self-sufficent, love animals and be confident to have a go. Currently we have a large vege garden which need prep for the new plants to go in. We like it when you cook and there is always miles of eggs! Work includes painting, weeding, animal feeding and care. We now have 28 newly laying hens that demand a cuddle and adore attention. We have yet to get the alpacas halti trained. We have miles of spare clothes and gumboots, so not to worry about those things. Please feel most welcome to email at any time. It can be a few days as I email usually from work., Cheers and thanks, Nicky
Area: CaliforniaDue to family issues we will not be able to host for a while. If you do come to LA and want someone to show you around, get in touch with me. I work, but am usually available weekday evenings and weekends. We are easy going people. My mother is 87 years old and is still active, still drives, but she has no energy. I'm 60, work in a school. I've recently moved in with my mom so I can be more help to her. Hosting Workaway volunteers has been a wonderful experience for us. We like getting some work done around the house, but what we really enjoy is what I call cultural exchange. We can be flexible with work hours. When I have time I enjoy showing visitors around LA.
Area: HessenWe are a very open minded and relaxed family of four living in a house with seven other students. We enjoy our big garden very much. We are in the center of a historical University town surrounded by five hundred years old buildings, like the castle on the top of the hill and many old houses all around. The river, the forest, but also the the medieval center of the city with the shops are in walking distance. We are next to the oldest protestant University in Germany with 25 thousand students. The atmosphere in the city is very young and lively. There is a lot of culture, but also the opportunity to bike or to walk. We are one train hour from Frankfurt. Our children are 10 and 5 years old. We always had people living with us, aupairs or workawayers from the US, the UK, France, Danmark and Canada, or students in the house. We have a lovely Labrador mix dog. We are used to share our space and we love to welcome people who are also open minded, curious, creative and have positive energy.
Area: AlbertaWe run an 80 acre, mixed, organic farm and organic food store just outside Lethbridge, Alberta about 1 hour east of Waterton National Park and the Rocky Mountains on the Alberta prairie. The farm is a busy place from April to November, tending the ALL organic strawberry fields, vegetable gardens, apple and raspberry orchards as well as taking care of the sheep and cattle on pasture. We are also in the process of completing three eco-buildings on the farm. They are built with light straw/clay construction and feature clay plasters on the interior and hydraulic lime stucco on the exteriors. One of the structures is a new organic food store/wood-fired oven bakery/alternative health center and it features a traditional Japanese joinery timber-frame. This summer we are planning to do a water bio-remediation project for our farm domestic water supply that will feature bio-sand and bio-gravel filtration, use of aquatic plants and trees and other innovative natural techniques to improve water quality. We hope this project will serve as a model for other farmers in this area that like us, do not have a well and must rely on surface water for domestic usage. We also have a unique metal roofing project we want to undertake this summer as well as lots of landscape work around the new eco-buildings. Additionally, we want to build Hugelkultur style, dry-stack boulder walled, raised mulch beds for tomato and greens cultivation. If you like the sun, outdoor manual work and want an opportunity to learn about organic agriculture, holistic health, eco-building and more, we are glad to share what we have learned over the last 18 years of operating this farm in exchange for reliable and enthusiastic help. We offer clean and spacious accommodations as well as ALL organic food. We welcome volunteers from any country but in particular have close ties with Israel and Japan. Please contact us if you are interested for a phone interview and to get more information.
