Area: British ColumbiaLooking for volunteers from Oct 12. to end of October. It is a good time to come see the sockeye spawn near the hostel. These salmon turn a bright red when spawning. We are a small international youth hostel in Shuswap Lake BC, Canada Our hostel dorms on in Cabooses . We are right on the water at the base of Squilax Moiuntain. There is lots of hiking in the area as well as canoeing, ziplining, segway tours and wildlife viewing. Come and experience a campfire by the water, stargazing, eagle and beaver watching. The hostel has a small grocery store featuring local and organic groceries.
Area: Ghour Al-Mazra`aI live in Al Mazra'a located in the south of the Dead Sea in Jordan. There are many beautiful canyons and hot springs to explore nearby and the salty Dead Sea to float in. I am happy to host one volunteer for long tearm in my project in exchange for help planing and site work, designing and implementing a simple permaculture garden at more than 25 schools and improving the initial model . The mission of our NGO is to promote a sustainable environment and economy in the Jordan valley in which both humans and the natural environment flourish. The Center strives to accomplish this mission through the methods of Eco-Tourism by establishing an Eco-Camp for visitors to the area and Ghour al-Mazraa as an Eco-Village for the local residents. Main objectives: 1. Nature conservation 2. Environmental education 3. Intercultural exchange & cross-border meetings 4. Sustainable tourism Objective 1: Nature conservation The center's project is located in a critical area where climate change and environmental pollution are quickly eroding Jordan's landscape, a clear example of humans interfering with the natural cycle, unbalance between the nature, agriculture and industry. Natural areas like the Dead Sea are endangered to disappear – each year its water level looses more than 1 meter. So a nature reserve has to be created to protect this unique region in the Jordan Valley and raise awareness about the environmental threats. There will also be a link to other already existing projects, for example those for the rehabilitation of the Jordan River. Objective 2: Environmental education The Center will be a creative community space that seeks to educate locals and internationals about sustainable living practice, raise awareness about overuse and pollution, teaching easy ways we can all limit our waste. Here will be designed to be a living, working example of practices we should all be using in our homes. Workshops and meetings shall reach youth and adults, projects are planned to be also realised in public places like mosques and schools. Objective 3: Intercultural exchange & cross-border meetings Our Center will be a multicultural meeting point. International volunteers are been given a chance to live in Arabic family to learn about traditions and every day life. Meanwhile, they can teach the family English. Local volunteers can arrange educational tours for travellers and show them their music, life style and dreams. Cross-border meetings could be also possible in a later stage. Water scarcity is a common problem between the Jordan River neighbors. So there have to be common talks between those neighbors. As soon as the local community understands the water problem, they will have the chance to meet with the neighbor countries to find solutions how to use water more wisely – and let everybody use this resource in a fair and sustainable way. Objective 4: Sustainable tourism The Dead Sea area is a main stop for tourists – but there are not many cheap and no eco- friendly accommodation options. The Center will be the unique alternative. It will show the local side to travellers: they can sleep in a traditional mud brick house and Bedouin tents, come in contact with local families, take educational tours, make hiking trips, enjoy evenings with Arabic music and dance and much more – everything with eco-friendly rules. Educational films, presentations, and hands-on recycling workshops will also take place here. Travellers shall benefit from locals, locals from travellers.,,,,,,,,,,,
Area: SicilyWe'd need help starting from the middle of November till late spring and are looking for a couple or two friends traveling together. I will be going to England on December 16 for a few months. Being the only English speaker in the family, I cannot help then but restrict the stay, after my departure date, to anyone having at least a basic understanding of the Italian language. Capito? :) To everyone coming from the sky: try to pick your flight on Wednesday. It’ll probably be the cheapest and we’ll be in Catania and may 100% pick you up at the airport. If you are nearby and want to pay a visit you’re just welcome! Fall and winter here are the best seasons of the year. A lot of fruit (lemons, oranges, madarins, clementines, citrons, annonas, avocados, guavas, pomegranates, medlars, etc., etc.) is going to be ripen soon end needed to be picked almost every day throughout all the season. We'll even pick olives in November and then lemons in January. -- Hi, my name’s Guido and with my family (parents, sister -currently studing away- and grandma) live in a nice country house in the middle of a 3 acre lemon tree garden in Giarre on Mount Etna’s east side. My parents work for the Italian education department, my father as a teacher, my mother in administration. My sister’s studying art heritage restoration and my granny is the real garden keeper here! We are trying to make the garden a sort of nice orchard producing as many varieties of fruit as the climate allows. We are firmly against chemicals of any sort (and have always been, even before being certified), and pretty much orientated toward permaculture and sustainable development. We have two dogs (Jaco and Bianca), few chickens and some bunnie. I’ve been a volunteer myself. I’ve spent a year in UK and Ireland to loosen up my tongue a bit. English then will be our official language, yet I’m afraid there’ll be a lot of Italian and dialect gibberish in the house (don’t forget my grandma). Anyone interested in italian language or already into it, of course, will be doubly welcome regardless of language. I’m able to understand some Spanish too (I’m working on it), and generally curious about all languages.
