Beschreibung

Ed and I are building a Hacienda, using stones from the land and earth to make adobe bricks, in the beautiful countryside 20 minutes from Sucre, Bolivia. The land measures 10.5 acres. We have dug a well and are now in the process of constructing our home. When finished we will move onto building the main structure, which will house a restaurant/bar, cinema, library/internet room, kitchen as well as accommodation for guests. We will also be building separate adobe casitas in the grounds as well as a swimming pool, one or two plunge pools and adobe bread/pizza ovens. An accommodation block for volunteers/staff is planned with showers, composting toilets and a kitchen. We plan to keep chickens, pigs, horses and possibly alpacca, plant an orchard and grow veggies.

Arbeit

At first we will be looking for volunteers to help to create and upgrade
the campsite, so that our helpers staying in tents can have comfortable surroundings. We will be building a kitchen area as well as a composting toilet and shower. This will require making adobe bricks and you will be taught how to do this. We also will need help with building walls and fences to secure the boundaries. Land clearing - removing stones and thorn bushes - will also be a priority. Later on when the business is up and running we will require help in all departments ticked above - and some that cannot yet be described!

Ed and I will ensure that training in alternative building techniques is provided. FOR THIS REASON WE ASK FOR VOLUNTEERS WHO ARE COMMITTED TO STAYING WITH US FOR AT LEAST 10 DAYS (with the proviso suggested by Workaway of an initial week's trial period) Additionally, there will be the opportunity to learn Spanish and the local indigenous Cechua language used by our workers.
The beautiful colonial city of Sucre (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is accessible by regular mini buses, stopping a 10 minute walk from our land. There are plenty of museums, bars and restaurants and some interesting nightclubs!

One of our Bolivian workers, Freddie, shows Dominic and Thomas how to build an adobe wall.
By the time they leave they have built a shelter from the prevailing wind for the kitchen area.
Ben and Sarah attack a tree - very handy having a volunteer who has worked as a tree surgeon!

-> Volunteer near Sucre, Bolivia. A great way to learn about earth building and getting know Bolivian culture!

Ed and June are very thoughtful people, and this is reflected in their project. We were well looked after, and kept busy learning how to build stone walls, and other aspects of building too. Bolivian builders were our teachers, and lunch time football teammates, which helped us feel relaxed and at ease. The campsite is a great place to unwind at the end of the day, and a beautiful place to wake up to.

-> Dominic

Dominic brought a friend Thomas - they worked for us for 2 weeks. As we are new to Workaway, they helped create a campsite for future volunteers using stone and earth. They were quick learners and enthusiastic in their work. When they left us, they went to Tarabuco, a market town near Sucre, purchased a donkey and walked back to Sucre in 3 days, before giving the donkey away. They made many friends along the way, and were given shelter at night. We are full of admiration for their spirit of adventure.

-> Arthur

Arthur Duncan stayed with us for 6 days until we asked him to leave, having only worked 2 days. We thought he was leaving to catch a bus to another part of Bolivia and left him in our apartment with instructions to hand the keys to our landlady. We went away for 2 days but he found out that the buses were not running, and he was in bed in our apartment when we got back. He had got the keys back from our landlady. The place was a mess, he had gone out and got drunk the night before, lots of empty beer bottles and he had invited someone we did not know into our apartment. We consider him to be irresponsible and would not recommend him.
