Area: OkinawaSix months of the year I live in a small Okinawan fishing and farming village and run a two room guest house with my long time friend Sayori San. We need help with the gardening and the house cleaning and can offer one or two people their own bedroom upstairs. We can help you learn Japanese language and culture. I can take you around the island snorkeling, hiking, biking, shopping, paragliding, surfing, kayaking, eating etc. I hope you are interested! I love company. A note about Rural Okinawan Culture: This community is not a modern urban Japanese community. When I am in residence I must change my behavior and my clothing in order to be accepted and not cause trouble for my hosts. While the independent western woman I am rolls my eyes at such things as wearing the right shaped bra and always covering my crotch such that the outline never shows (as would happen if I were to tuck my shirt into my pants), I adopt an attitude of learning from the culture I am visiting rather than insisting on my right to dress and act in total freedom. If you were to decide to stay with us, there will be an on going conversation about how your actions are perceived by your hosts community. In addition, people under the age of 20 are still considered children, minors, in Japan. You are not allowed to drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes, drive cars, vote or make life decisions such as engagement for marriage until you are 20. Thus, workaway volunteers younger than 20 will find their activities here even more restricted than those older than 20. Having said all of that, Okinawa is really interesting and may very well steal your heart. It is one of the few places in the world where women run the religion as documented in Susan Sered's book "Women of the Sacred Groves: Divine Priestesses of Okinawa" If you have an interest in a society that is fundamentally different than your own, our village is one place where you can observe that difference. It will open your mind. Plus, Okinawa is drop dead gorgeous and the people will treat you like family right after you meet.

Area: AlgarveWe have opened a new hostel in Faro and want you to be part of our team that includes some volunteers and is led by a former helper and an experienced traveler. As the project takes off, we need enthusiastic people to help us. This is an amazing opportunity to spend some time in the sunny Algarve region and to meet people from different cultures while helping us to turn a traditional portuguese house into a friendly and fun hostel. So, hard-working, enthusiastic and creative people: you can stop looking for another host, pack your stuff and come to Faro!
Area: Malaysian Borneo (Sabah)We are a Franco-Canadian family of 5 living in the city of Kota Kinabalu, in eastern Malaysia. The region is called Borneo, famous for its beaches , diving sites, and Mount Kinabalu. Our apartment is located in a condominium building, with fitness room, swimming pool, free Wi-fi, and ping-ping facilities. It's a 10-minute walk away from the main bus lines and a 20-minute walk away fropm downtown. The train / coach station (destinations including Quimper, le Conquet, Rennes) is a block away. The beach is 15 minutes away. We live close to the pubs and restaurants, and the lively Brest ports ( with boat rides to the Islands of Ouessant, Sein, Molene) are a 15-minute walk away too. If you wish to meet fellow travellers, local and foreign students, there is an international group in Brest bringing together expatriates and internationally-oriented people with mutual language and cultural interests in a spirit of shared generosity. It organises a vast choice of events including casual bar nights, language-exchange evenings, special events (BBQ, picnic) and parties.
