    Description

Our project for Disabled Persons is a registered, Community-based organization that works for both young children and adults with disabilities, who are still living with their families, to help them access services that would enable them to improve the quality standard of their lives. Additionally the project aims to promote awareness of quality among people with disabilities and others in the community. It was founded in September, 2011 and is run by a parent of children with disabilities in Rusinga Island, Mbita Sub-County in Homa Bay County- Kenya and such volunteers from Canada, Finland, Egypt, UK, Germany, USA, Australia, France and Netherlands. Project still flexible for more volunteers who can willing.

The project is still in its infancy and is in need of external support.

During the past 11 years, We have noticed that the condition of disabled people is still very poor in Rusinga Island. There is still a stigma attached to disability leading to a lack of rights for disabled people. which doesn't allow disabled people the same rights as others. There are several children with cerebral palsy who have never seen a physiotherapist.

We have conducted research on 56 families of children with disabilities and have become aware that these families need support, more knowledge and therapy for their children. They also need a place to meet to share their experiences and offer peer support. Our long-term project goal is to build a rehabilitation centre in Rusinga West where these services can be provided.

The plot for the centre will be provided by the project founders.

The project supports the local community initiatives as well as disabled persons in Rusinga Island. Our main objectives are to try to break a stigma which is still there, developing rights and services of the disabled persons. Our project will need especially physiotherapist, occupational therapist and speech training therapist. But any kind of skills or experience about disabilities, medical assistance, computer skills, fundraising support, etc. would be useful and we will recommend.

Aim is to encourage foreign students in areas of occupational therapist, orthopedic, physiotherapist and every one who is willing to join us, for the less fortunate life of the disabled persons, we still praying for the best with hope

Also, health professionals will also have the opportunity to put their skills into practice when visiting the children to potentially further develop their clinical skills.

    What else ...

Disability is with us. It is not curse or bad omen. Parents and guardians have kept their disabled children in their homes in seclusion as if there is no hope for them. Our initiative is to launch a campaign to sensitize the community with one message: Disability is not Inability. The clarion call is let us give them a chance. every child has a dream. We want to help them live it.

There is still a stigma attached to disability leading to a lack of rights for disabled people. In the last eight years we have carried out research on disabled children and their families.

These families need a place to meet. There is only one physiotherapist and one occupation therapist, orthopedic doctor, speech training therapist and no speech training therapist for 30,000 people on Rusinga Island and the surrounding area.

Our project objective is to build a rehabilitation centre in Rusinga west where these services can be provided and the physiotherapist can visit many disabled children in one visit.
