Description
I am a Gambian physician specialised in internal medicine. I worked in The Gambia for several years.
During the last fifteen years, with the support of family, friends and surrounding communities, we created a farm in The Gambia, West Africa. The name for the farm was spontaneously given by the neighbouring communities: it means, "the big garden". Its a great place. Some volunteers call it "Green Paradise".
It has become a nice place for different cultures to meet, exchange and create.
This 25-hectar farm situated in the outskirts of a historic village called Sanyang. It is 35 km from capital city Banjul, the capital city of the Gambia and 25 km from the only international Airport. Five buildings are constructed on the farm to facilitate hosting of workers, visitors and for storage of farm produce. Portable water is on the farm. Commodity shops and healthcare facilities are reachable.
A cook is employed . She cooks fresh food using produce from the farm supplementd by those from a nearby village market. Workers and visitors eat together three times a day.
Volunteers will be expected to participate in all aspects of farm activites depending on their capacities and affiliation:
1. Using Massey Fergussen tractor and a motor-cultivator to till the land
2. Biological compost preparation
3. Fertilizing, manuring and Trimming fruit trees
4. Harvesting farm produce (mangoes, cashew, oranges etc)
5. Taking care of small plants in the nursery area
6. Bee keeping activitiesTypes of help and learning opportunities

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
Volunteers and farm résidents live and work together. There is communication between everybody. This facilitates direct exchange. There are several villages surrounding the farm. Simply working through those vilages and interacting with villagers is enrichening. Several formal and informal tours are provided throuhgout the country. Volunteers to participate. Examples are visiting the snake farm, katchikaly crocodile garden, the historic stone circle, magnificent beaches etc
Help
We have planted over 20,000 fruit-trees on this 25 hectare fertile farmyard during the last fifteen years. We need to care for these beautiful plants as biologically as possible. The planted trees are cashew, mango, citrus and several local forest trees.
1. We are considering ways of processing and conserving the delicious abundant fruits we harvest: drying, juicing production, marmelade and jam etc
2. We are building traditional round huts for ecologically inspired lodging of visitors and tourist.
3. We are creating outdoor furniture from wood grown on the farm to create so called "Chill-Spots" to make the farm as nice and convivial as possible.
5. We have a tractor and other agricultural small machinery and we need hands to help and teach us how to use them betterLanguages

On the farm. Solar lighting available!!!
The buiding are roundhuts mimicking the traditional way of living in rural communities of The Gambia, and more modern buildings. Simple furnitures such aas bed, chair and a sofa are present. Toilets are either in individual round huts or outside common WC.
Volunteers will be provided with single private rooms. There is a possibility of furnishing it to individual taste. This will be paid for by the farm. What else ...
There are no costs involved for volunteers. The farm is self reliant financially.
We do not expect financial gains from volunteers or from Workaway. We need skilled individuals from whom we can learn and who can also experience our great culture and traditions
We established a Healthcare Association. With this organisation we estbalished a hospital, where I worked from 2006 to 2014. During that period, the hospital established the Farm. The farm is an extension of the hoptal where we intend to do behavioural therapy, preventive medicne and teach environmental awareness among other activities. The Healthcare Association, the medical center and Farm are all one entity.A little more information
