Bonjour!
We are Dalila (french), Pete (english), Emilie (3 1/2 years old) and Sidney (nearly 1 year old). Our place is an old château set in 29 acres of meadow, in the Pyrénées mountains, 1h30 south of Toulouse.
We've finished renovating the interior of the château in 2009, and with sustainability in mind, installed solar panels for hot water, photovoltaic panels for electricity, rain water collection, composting. We're using our own wood for cooking and heating in the winter; and using fruits and vegs from our garden in the summer months.
We're now onto our next projects of renovating the outbuildings, landscaping the garden and generally maintaining the grounds of the property.
We are looking for enthusiastic, energetic people who enjoy physical work, being outdoors, who show initiative and are fairly independant, as we both work from a home office and looking after our little ones keeps us busy!
The help we need includes:
- chainsaw, cut and split wood for heating
- tidy the grounds (weeding, strimming, etc)
- cut and clear out dead trees across the property
- maintain and weed our veg patch
- ongoing building work to renovate the outbuilding

We offer food & accomodation, in fantastic surroundings, in exchange for 26h help per week. The bedrooms are spacious, each with their own bathroom/washroom. The food is home-cooked with local produces (fresh eggs and cheese made 500m from our house, veal and beef from farmer down the road, honey from nearby villages, etc), fruits and vegetables we grow from our garden, home-made jams and pickles etc. As you'll live as part of our family, we expect you to participe in the daily light cleaning and washing up.
We have wi-fi internet, free phone calls to landlines internationally, can lend you a laptop to check emails/internet and offer bicycles to get around.
We are situated in a hamlet; 10 minutes away from St Girons, the main local town, which has many shops, cafés and a great traditional farmer's market every saturday.
In your spare time, you can enjoy the many walks around our place, stunning mountain views, biking, gliding, climbing, fishing, horse riding, bird watching, going to village fetes, vide-greniers, etc.

It was great having Kate with us. She helped with many jobs during her 3 weeks stay with us, including pointing a large stone wall, weeding, building walls, cleaning windows etc! The weather wasn’t always great, sometimes raining hard, but she never complained and just got on with the tasks in hand.

Victor is a great helper, friendly, calm and very easy to get on with! He stayed with us for 2 weeks, during which time he moved heavy rocks and beams, chain-sawed and split wood, removed sheep manure from our barn and did a lot of weeding in our vegetable patch and front garden.

I'll keep this description short and sharp. The food, conversation, setting, area, weather, most of the work and most of all the hosts at the chateau are fantastic. As Pete said, shifting the manure wasn't the most pleasant experience but it was worthwhile when at the end of the day you have all these positives. I would really highly recommend more
