    Description

Dear volunteer, please be so kind to read our description carefully.

Our organic/agro tourism project is close to the coast situated just in the back of a beautiful fisherman´s village called Santa Luzia, three kilometers away from Tavira. We grow vegetables and have a small fruit orchard, carobs, olives, figs and almond trees. We are interested in agriculture and self-sufficiency and have been selling our products on the market of Tavira, as part of a cooperative. The farm forms part of a small tourism rental company which we are in the process of expanding with facilities for catering for a farm to fork concept, an events hall and accommodation.
The farm is owned and managed by Tamar, you will work alongside with 2 to 5 other vounteers, together with Iuliu, who has extensive experience in organic agriculture and has been working on the lands here for many years.
We are looking for enthusiastic and energetic people, who are not afraid of physical work and are able to live and work in groups. Having some previous experience is a plus. Our preference goes to people over the age of 22 and who enjoy walking and biking as it will be your main means of transport to the beach and to the local shops. Volunteers are asked to help from Monday to Friday, five hours a day, with a half an hour break, usually starting at 8 am (and when it is too hot starting at 7 am) and to stay for a minimum of one month. Besides a variety of seasonal tasks, such as carob and olive harvests etc. a principal activity is weeding and preparing vegetables for the market.
We will supply you with fruits and vegetables from the farm and basic groceries for cooking a vegetarian diet. In addition, we give each helper 20 euros per week for shopping that is more personal and specific to each one. Meat, fish, snacks and alcohol are on your own expense. We bring you the basic groceries but the personal shopping each volunteer will buy and bring to the farm. We have a couple of bicycles with baskets and the nearest shops are 5 minutes away by bike. We ask you to self-cater and to be open for shared meals.
You will have the possibility to experience living in an old Algarve-style farm in some converted containers with all basic facilities available. This means that you might not have as much privacy, as the living spaces and kitchen and bathroom are shared. You are also welcome to bring your tent or caravan. There is a pool table, a washing machine and a beautiful beach just at your doorstep. Please be aware that we have limited wifi in the farm, the closest place with internet is located in the village.
Please do realize you will be in a rural environment; there are many animals and insects around and that temperatures can be very high during summer. For the winter times, please bring boots and warm clothing for the evenings. The container spaces are not heated.
Thank you for your attention and see you soon!

We show you farming tricks, teach you some skills, just generally show you a bit how life goes on a farm. There are many different nationalities at any given time here, which makes the dynamics interesting. We want you to enjoy your time here, but do keep in mind that it is not a free holiday, we expect you to do the tasks in a reasonable amount of time. After help time ends at 13.00, you are free to do whatever you want and explore the area.

You will have the possibility to experience living in an old Algarve-style farm environment. The 2 container houses share a covered kitchen/living space and bathroom with washing machine. This means that you might not have as much privacy. The containers can sleep up to 3 people each, however, we aim to give people their own private room but you may share with someone. You are also welcome to bring your tent or caravan. In the winter it can get cold, so take some warm clothing and boots. The space is not heated.

    What else ...

We are situated in the Ria Formosa natural reserve, surrounded by many beautiful beaches, various castles, mountains & one of the greatest bird watching sites in the world. There are lots of beautiful places to see around the area. Tavira is a beautiful town with lots of character and has a few bars which are more lively in the summer, yet winter time is very beautiful and relatively warm compared to the rest of Europe. Trains come and go from Tavira as well. So it is fairly easy to get around in your free time. We have a couple of bikes for the volunteers. The nearest shops are 8 minutes walk away and there is a variety of good cafes and restaurants in Santa Luzia. Tavira takes about 30 minutes on foot.
