Come and join me in Fiji
Description
I am an Australian who has lived in New Zealand for the past 32 years however, I recently chose to settle in Fiji because I love the tropical weather and the relaxed Fijian lifestyle.
Fijian life includes sharing extended family duties, so quite often there are one or two kids staying over, mucking in on the farm. The kids are taught from a young age how to cook and wash their own clothes so, if you need a cookery lesson they will be happy to show you the authentic Fijian way.
My main area of interest lies within chicken farming, I started over a year ago with 30 chickens and now have over 300 – this is where you can help; by feeding, raking, changing water, collecting eggs and general hen house tasks. Building is also something I need help with, the expansion of this project requires a few new shelters, and maybe a fence. I like to grow my own fruit and veg., and previous work-awayers have set up small garden areas within the compound which need daily attention; weeding, watering, crop rotation, sowing and harvesting. Right now there are tomatoes, coriander, bok choy and capsicum growing… You can help around the farm or you can focus on your favourite area, 20 work-awayers have stayed to date and I look forward to hosting many more.
The work is fairly laid back and there will be plenty of time to explore the island, I eat traditional Fijian and Indian cuisine, I’m not vegetarian but vegetarians are welcome, smokers are welcome and most evenings I enjoy a beer or a bowl of kava (traditional Fijian herbal beverage) with locals and guests.

I have a number of projects going on at the moment and I would like helpers to get involved in any (or all!) of them:
Free range poultry farm both for meat and eggs. The birds and eggs are sold live at the farm gate.
Market gardening ,tomatoes, egg plants, beans and capsicum for the local market.
Gardening: I would like to expand the vegetable garden by adding more produce.
Permaculture: I am a permaculture enthusiasts and, albeit not totally organic, I would love to learn more about permaculture practices and implement them. Interest/knowledge/skills in permaculture would be a bonus.
Fishing: I enjoy fishing from the local jetty and I may build a small boat soon for fishing purposes.

Logement
I currently rent a 3/4 bedroom house which has electricity and a few other mod cons ( refrigerator, Internet access - Mobile Web), but is basic by western standards (cold showers, no TV and no washing machine at the moment).
I have a large compound which could be camped on, so you are welcome to pitch your tent if you like, but we have rooms inside the house too.

Rakiraki is three hours by bus north west of Nadi where the international airport is. It is a sugar cane farming area and not a tourist destination this is rural Fiji. Not much happens here and what doe's happen happens slowly so the longer you can stay the better. All the workawayers have enjoyed the experience and I have likewise enjoyed hosting them. All you need to bring is relaxed attitude a robust sense of humour.

This was our first workaway experience and has set the bar very high. 1 week ended up being 2 weeks and probably would have been longer if we had the time. If your lucky enough to stay with Jim you will be made to feel at home straight away and have a great experience of the real Fiji. Jim is really easy to get on with, very relaxed and we learnt more
Stephen and Liz were great here with us.I really can't recommend them highly enough to any future hosts.Stephen is as solid as a rock and totally unflappable he just gets on with the work at hand whatever it may be and see's it through till it is finished to his high standard.Liz really was into the family the animals and what needed to be done more

When I think back to my time in Fiji, i am reminded of the beautiful landsacpe, fascinating culture, and most of all, its incredible people. Staying with Jim and Kara was one of the highlights of my year long trip. As my first workaway I was not sure what to expect, but I was welcomed almost as part of the family - after travelling for a year more
We all loved having Meg here with us she is a lovely, strong capable young woman.Nothing was a problem to her whether it was looking after the kids, shopping in town, helping Kara at the shop or working hard in the garden. When Meg first arrived Rosie who is four kept calling her Egg after first asking "What's her name"Rosie and Meg grew to be good more
Jim and Kara's hearts are as big as the island of Fiji. The work -mostly building gardens, tending chickens, and looking after the kids - was always fun and completed with a joyous spirit. This was our first workway and we fell in love with the experience. They get a lot of requests so consider yourself lucky if you land a spot on the farm. The more
Dwight and Jessica stayed with us for just under two weeks. In that time they did gardening, child minding and cooking. They also helped prepare the shop for opening which had Dwight helping with construction and Jessica ironing clothes. All these varied tasks where undertaken in a responsible and happy way. Both of them were absolutely brilliant with more
My stay at Jim and Kara's was a great experience. They are very friendly, kind and laid-back. I enjoyed all the work done over there, as there is always something to do and excellent opportunities for variety. The accommodation was clean and food was really good (and authentic Fijian). The area is stunningly beautiful and far away from the tourism more
Pietro's stay with us was far to short we all enjoyed having him with us so much.I would highly recommend him to any host as an adaptable good natured intelligent workawayer who really works.Pietro definitely gives more than he receives. We just hope he comes back to us sooner rather than later.
