Area: EnglandHi our names are James and Tamara Stubbs. We live with our dog in a small Somerset village nestled in the hills outside of Frome (7 miles). James works from home and Tamara freelances and when she is not at home she could be anywhere in the world. It is a very sociable village with lots of things going on and a vibrant pub. There are no shops here but just 4 miles away is the small town of Bruton which has everything from a post office to a good butcher. Also some good additional pubs and great places to eat and drink. Batcombe is a very classic, unspoilt and very friendly English village and the roads here are very quiet. The walking is exceptional, hilly, and the dog is always up for extra walks, if you wanted the company. There are some interesting artisan food and drink producers in the area. We are near to Frome, Glastonbury, Wells, Stonehenge, Cheddar Gorge, Bradford-on-Avon, Bath. London is about 2 hours away either by train or there is an excellent coach service. If you are looking for classic English country life you would find it here. The villagers are worldly, welcoming and many, possibly most, have moved into the area from else where. There is no public transport but we will be happy to give a number of lifts to the local towns and sights during your time here. Ah yes! Our project. We have brought an old cottage which is has just been completely renovated. There are still odd jobs to do in the house but we really want to get the garden back where the builders have killed it. We would be looking for someone who enjoys gardening but would be happy to turn there hand at other projects in the home.
Area: Languedoc RoussillonWe are an English couple in the south of France with 2 young friendly dogs and busy day jobs. We moved into a lovely old French house in November 2012. It was built in 1810 so there's plenty to do! and we would really appreciate at least 1 or 2 extra pairs of hands to help us progress things. Before contacting us, please check our Calendar for possible dates.
Area: Lazio, very close to Rome (35 min by train) and UmbriaBecause of a last minute cancellation we need help for minimum 4 weeks beginning last week of august 14th. This 4 weeks include moving, homebirth of young couple, 27th years party and another party for graduation of one of my sons. It will be full of experience and fun. We live in the Italian countryside in a very traditional way, although we are not a traditional farm. In fact, I am a general practitioner, very often working away from home, and running a bed&breakfast at the house. This means that I need the help of someone guaranteeing continuity in the house, garden, feeding the chickens, goats etc. This also means that I have less time than I would like to be together... and I need someone who can work independently with little guidance. We have two positions to fill: one longer term (at least one month) for assisting in taking care of the house and garden, and a shorter term one for odd jobs in the garden, vegetable patch, etc. We eat healthy food from our vegetable garden and make our own bread and jams. Now we are vegetarian, and on the way to becoming vegan. We use olive oil from our own trees - which is very precious for us! Our philosophy: environment respect, domestic economy, recycling any trash, and gratefulness for what we receive from Nature... From the volunteer we expect: Interest and will to learn. Flexibility to adapt to our lifestyle and desire to be integrated. The person must be able to work independently and on their own initiative. There are many projects and types of work but you will be working on your own a lot of the time. We have had wonderfully rich experiences of meeting young and older people coming from all kinds of cultures. In the case of more volunteers present in the farm we can alternate one full day of active presence with one full day free. The station is 7 km away (from here you can walk less than 1 km to a bus stop, hitchhike or cycle). Daily chores around the kitchen are expected of everyone, even guests, this goes without saying and is not really the 'work' expected in this Workaway. . We have a maid that comes a few days a week so you are not expected to do any serious cleaning, just simple tasks like preparing the kitchen for breakfast, keeping the woodpile stocked from already cut wood (winter), watering plants (summer) and clearing the table after meals. You also need to do 4 hours of work everyday on different projects around the property and hopefully creatively contribute to the progress of the home (this could be completing a specific outdoor project, there is plenty of mending and repair work or creative projects like constructing paths with tile pieces). This task could be any number of things, but importance is placed on leaving your mark on the home and contributing. Also, if you work for a full day, this can be in exchange for a full day to visit one of several attractions or towns nearby (Rome, Assisi, Orvieto, Spoleto, to name a few) Potential workers should keep in mind that this is not a free hostel! You have to be absolutely willing to adapt yourself to the way of life here - with its rules and habits - even if it is not what you are used to. Having a positive attitude is essential in this respect. Please watch this short film to get an idea of my values, as I am not willing to compromise them- look on google Annie Leonard, "story of stuff". You should ask yourself whether or not you find this agreeable before asking to come work here. The importance of this experience is not solely the physical work in exchange for food and a bed, but rather a willingness to learn and build a relationship. Since I very often work away, I like to come back to a nice atmosphere where I can feel really at home! I am really happy for people to "feel at home" here, but I also want them to "feel the home" and really be part of it. Just to give an example, you can not enjoy a drink standing just in front of a plant dying of thirst and not do anything about it...

It is all organically grown. What we need help with is maintenance of the buildings, chopping wood, forestry, gardenwork, planting, harvesting, painting and mending fences, householdwork, grooming the horses and riding. We also need to take care of saddles and bridles and clean the stables. You will learn a lot about westernriding and natural horsemanship, ecological farming, permaculture and how to run a farm. You are also welcome to borrow our bikes if you want to explore the surroundings or if you want to go to Gothenburg one day you are there in one hour. The accomodation is in a guesthouse with axess to bathroom and kitchen in the mainhouse. We also have a couple of rooms in the house available. You are welcme to keep your own household or share the meals and householdwork with us. Normally we eat together. Both vegetarian food and meet is available. We are interested in helpers both for longer or shorter periods. If you want you can even stay in one of our tipis in summer. You need to be healthy, we don´t take people with allergies or diseases. There is a small village 5 km from us with stores, banks, library, medical centre, pizzarestaurant and railwaystation. To come here from Falköping you drive road 47 towards Trollhättan. After 15 km you will see a sign Floby 6, turn left, pass a church and turn right at the next sign Trävattna, follow the road around 5 km until you see a farm with red houses and a barn, red fences and horses. We also pick you up at the Floby trainstation. From Gothenburg there are trains to Floby, takes around one hour.
