Area: NorthlandMy home is an adobe earth house in the middle of Honeymoon Valley surrounded by bush. We built it ourselves using local clay. We planted many fruit trees, timber and fire wood trees. There are gardening, painting, building and maintenance jobs all year round. Sewing and making clothes is a project for this winter! Families are welcome as I have plenty of toys from my grandchildren. My place suits mature, independent people with interests in creative landscaping, organic gardening, compost making, building, woodwork, international cuisine, baking, music (you can use my piano & guitar), movies, reading, languages, education and the arts. I have chickens, and my very friendly dog Buddy, sometimes friends bring over their horses and cows to graze my paddocks. I work at the local school teaching Drama, Dance, French, German, Spanish, and History. Honeymoon Valley has great neighbours and community, but at the same time my place is very quiet and relaxed. There are no shops close to my house, no TV (except for watching DVDs), no WIFI. We can swim in the Oruru river and we do beautiful walks right out from my door.

We have no TVs or Radios here for entertainment. We don't need them! The hostel/B&B work includes looking after our guests, ... answering the telephone, helping/making and putting out breakfasts, cleaning bathrooms/common rooms/kitchen, etc. The season developes slowly from Mar to June, gets busy during Jul-Aug and starts getting quiet again thereafter. We close for winter from about 08 Nov to 08 Mar. The hours of work depend on the amount of guests staying but usually, the housework will be in the morning... (1-3 hours, cleaning the building after the guests leave). If there is little or no work in the hostel we work in the garden weeding, cutting grass, looking after the flowers, chickens, etc. After that, or if you really need a break, you can go exploring the wonderful landscape, beaches, forest park, etc.. The evening work (1600-2200) requires one person to be on call... answering the telephone or receiving, briefing and booking guests into the accommodation. Everybody has a day off every week to go for a longer trip. If you like the countryside you will love it here. We need somebody who is friendly, reliable and not afraid of work. It is important that you have some English, (to make bookings, answer the phone and have a chat with our guests). We offer free accommodation to our volunteers, in a little annex to the Mill House and €50 per week towards your food. We provide free Internet and WIFI so bring your Laptop if you wish. Many, many thanks to all you wonderful helpers/workers/volunteers who helped us through 2012! You brightened up our lives. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. Best wishes and looking forward to hearing from you. Brendan.
