-> Volunteer in Toscana, Italy. Help with house and with hot air balloons. We stayed with Martin last summer. The work is physically tough at times but nothing that we were not warned about. The area is pretty but gets VERY hot in the summer - the caravan is perfectly confortable except that it also gets very hot.
The area is very isolated and Martin mixes almost exclusively with other English ex-pats so don't expect to meet many Italians. Martin's friends are all very welcoming and kind - for me, it was just that we had come to Italy to see the country, meet the people and speak the language, almost none which actually happened. When we were there, the only way we had of getting anywhere was to walk or ask Martin to drive us, which felt awkward after a while.
Also, be aware that Martin only flies very early in the morning and only at weekends (for various reasons), which means that unless the weather cooperates, you will not fly. We were there for a month and did not get to go up in the balloon, which was a great shame as it was the main thing that had drawn us. Other people did get to go up so it's a case of making sure that you're far enough up the queue (or, as we concluded, not relying on this at all and just paying for it some other time somewhere else).
This workaway was useful because it taught us what we want to look out for in future; I imagine the first few workaways are always a steep learning curve for all involved.
