Area: UlsterWe are a middle aged couple (one English and one Irish) who have taken the plunge and moved from the sunny south coast of the UK to the beautiful North West of Ireland. We have taken on a small hillside holding and the renovation of an old stone cottage. We ultimately aim to live as self sustainably as we can whilst preserving some modern comforts such as TV, washing machine, broadband etc. This will of course, all take time and money! Still, we currently have 4 goats, 2 dogs, 2 kittens and some poultry (free range eggs available daily at the moment). Our scenery is stunning and our fields run down to a small stream. We are 7 miles from the nearest town so please hold that in mind although I would be happy to offer a taxi service a couple of times a week depending on my work commitments. We'd also be happy to do a bit of tourist trail stuff - once again depending on work commitments.

Area: MadeiraWe're currently searching for a volunteer for these start dates: - November 3 - December 27 Hi everyone! We're Philippe and Anna. Since June 2013 we're running the first hostel on our beautiful island, 20 minutes walking from Funchal center. Ourselves being backpackers, our goal is to make the place a comfortable and homey place to stay for people who come to discover Madeira and find new friends. The hostel itself is a big house with capacity of 22 people. Here we have a bit of everything - bunk-bedrooms, private rooms for couples or friends, shared living rooms. At least once a week we have some events like social games or dinners. The minimum term for a volunteer is 20 days (it's the minimum time you can see everything around, sharing your time with us)
Area: North Devon, EnglandWe have a small organic farm of about 88 acres all permanent pasture (except small wood and kitchen garden). Livestock - about 200 sheep (including about 60 milking sheep), about 20 Devon cattle, some poultry and two sows. We milk our sheep in a milking parlour with a vacuum line and have a dairy where we make our own cheese. All management of livestock & cheesemaking practices conform to the Soil Association standards. We are members of the Specialist Cheesemakers' Association and have had success in the Organic Food Awards and the 'British Cheese Awards.' Our general aim is to farm in a humane and sustainable way, restore and maintain the traditional landscape features, produce excellent cheese and be as self sufficient as possible. We can demonstrate organic pasture management, animal husbandry, sheep milking, hedge laying. We are near the sea and good coastal walks. We have farmed here since 1992. Lawrence does most of the farm work and Karen does the cheese making and marketing. We are in our sixties and before 1992, were architects. Our son Bennet also lives on the farm. He is in his twenties, helps on the farm sometimes, has a history degree from the Open University and works part time as a library assistant. We are non-smokers and do not allow smoking in the house. We have wireless internet.
