Volunteer needed at old farmhouse in beautiful Norway
Country: Norway
Last Activity: 01/02/2012
Description
URGENTLY LOOKING FOR A VOLUNTEER TO BABYSIT - Exams are coming up, and we urgently need someone to take care of Eydis (10 months) during the day. I will be home, but need to study for my exam. I will be sitting upstairs (within calling distance :-) while you play with, feed and change Eydis. Your day begins at around 9 and ends around 16:00.
Ingeborg
We are a belgian-norwegian couple living in a traditional farmhouse outside the city of Trondheim. Ingeborg (28) is a first year master student of geography at the university of Trondheim. Tormod (28) finishes his master degree in archaeology in May. Ellinor is almost 2 and attends kindergarten at our university. Ingeborg will be at home with Eydis (born in February) in 2011, but Tormod will commute to Trondheim every day.
Our house is located about 60km from Trondheim in a valley called Amdal. Views over Selbusjøen-lake make this a very idyllic location. There are excellent opportunities for hiking, mountain biking and kayaking. If you are a keen fisherman, you can try your luck in several lakes in the area. In winter, you can strap on skis at our doorstep and explore the area. We can provide you with camping and sports equipment if necessary. Please note that this is a remote location, which means you have to be content in your own and our company.
Our timber house was built around 1890 and, when we bought it in December 2007, in dire need of renovation. We find it hard to find local craftsmen who respect the character of the old house, and who are willing to use old techniques and materials. This is a main concern to us, as far too many houses in the area lost their soul after drastic renovations .
We could really use some help on odd jobs around the house. For instance, the entire house needs to be painted on the outside. In spring and summer there is work in the vegetable garden, and in August there is a lot of mushroom and berry picking. For these jobs you don't really need to have any experience, but we do require you to have used your hands before (farmwork, caring for horses, gardening,...). You have to be physically fit and not be afraid to break a sweat.
If you have experience with carpentry or masonry, there are plenty of jobs for you as well. The original windows need to be renovated, the entrance hall should be rebuild, the fireplaces need to be reconstructed and both the barn and smithy need their roofs mended.
You are welcome at our house if you:
- are ok with physical work
- are ok with getting your hands dirty
- have an eye for detail
- get along with small children
- are a non-smoker or prepared to smoke outside
- are ok with pets (2 cats and a crazy little dog)
- are enthusiastic about good food
- love fresh air
Please realize that you WILL be required to do physical work and that you WILL get dirty. We have had some helpers who were reluctant to get soil under their finger nails or who were worried about getting their clothes filthy. It will save all of us a lot of trouble if you are honest to yourself and to us about what kind of work you are happy to do. You will also be required to work independently, which means we need be able to trust you to do a job well, and to complete it.
This is the deal:
- because we live in a remote valley, we suggest you work full days and safe up spare time. This way you can spend for example the weekend away. We can help you find (free) accommodation in Trondheim. We commute to Trondheim, so transport to and from the city is not a problem.
- in return for work, you get free accommodation and free meals, and ideally become part of our family for a while. If you are interested in learning languages (Norwegian, Dutch) we will gladly help you out
- we expect you to help out with cooking and cleaning up the dishes - these chores are not part of your working hours
- because of the arrival of a new baby, the guest room has been made into our bedroom. You will get a bed on the attic, which is really cosy and has great views accross the valley. On cold nights, you can heat the bed with an electric blanket! You use our bathroom and kitchen, and are of course welcome to use our living areas, internet and Skype connection. We do not have a tv.
- when we have the time, we can take you on outings if you like. Possible trips could be hiking in the mountains (Sylan, Trollheimen, Dovre), renting a cabin for a weekend, taking the train to Røros,...
If this sounds like a good opportunity, please don't hesitate to contact us! Looking forward to hearing from you!
kind regards,
Ingeborg and Tormod
