Area: Amazon, Tefé, BrazilBe welcome at our farm! We would like to receive volunteers for our recently started project (starting November 2014). We have a dream: To turn an abandoned plantation surrounded by natural rainforest into a good working sustainable farm with an agroforestry system, including beekeeping and animal breeding (pigs, chickens, ducks, fish) and processing of farm products. The “Refugio”, as the word says, will be a place to “withdraw” from city-life, a learning-farm with exchange of experiences, where alternatives for the present socio-economical conditions of the local farmers are shown and with the possibility for visits by people of the surrounding and tourists. Our main goal: To show there is no need to cut more tropical rainforest for livelihood. We have a property: The place, purchased in 2012, consists of 25ha with about 4ha plantation. A part of this plantation is planted with fruittrees like cupuaçu (Theobroma grandiflorum), abacate (Persea americana), mari-mari (Cassia leiandra), pupunha (Bactris spp), açai (Euterpe spp), mapati (Porouma secropiafolia), etc. The rest is fallow-area from the manioc plantations of the former owners. The other 20 hectares is rain forest with impressive native trees, like the tree of the famous Brasil-nut (Bartholetia excelsa), monkeys (one of them is the Sagui, white fronted marmoset, which is the name of the place), birds, beautiful butterflies, etc. The site is situated 15km from the little town Tefé, nearby a little settlement. To get on the site, usually you will have to walk 50min from the main road. Depending on the weather, you can also arrive by mountainbike, motorbike or 4x4. Bettine (Netherlands), tropical agroforester, with working experience in Guyana, Colombia, the Philippines and now living in Tefé since 2005 and Fernando (Brazilian), philosopher, native of the State Para, with working experience with the Yanomami indigenous people, living in Tefé since 2007. We met 7 years ago while working on capacity building for indigenous people. We have two children Lilaia (6y) and Shanta (4y) and the dog Eros (3y). Our guesthouse, Pousada Multicultura (set up in 2010), is located in the center of Tefé. We also offer touristic tours in the area.
Area: Värmland*** We need especially help from late August/mid of August until Oktober or longer**** ***Note: We prefer long time stays of a minimum of 2 month**** We are a Huskyranch beautifully situated in the woods, nearby many lakes. We are a family of three (in short time 4), two adults and nearly 2 child (2y and our newborn expecting in september). We live together with our 30 sleddogs (Huskys, Malamutes, Greenlanddogs), many chickens, turkeys, pigs and reindeers in Värmland in the middle of sweden. During summer we offer hikingtours with our nordic dogs. And some outdooractivities. Also outdoor and hiking tours with our reindeers. During autumn we have to train the dogs on the ATV. Wintertime is dogsledding time. There is always really a lot to do. But we enjoy our life here in sweden. :-) Under the following years we want to enlarge the ranch, with different buildings, stables and more. So that we always are in need for help.
Area: Tuscany, near Lucca and Bagni di LuccaWe are a Kiwi family with 3 teenage kids, 2 dogs, a cat.... We moved to Northern Tuscany 5 years ago and are still working on a big refurbishment project. Area: AndaluciaDutch child psychologist/Mindfulness trainer and urban sketcher/painter, living in the Granada area, 20 minutes from the sea. I live on a rather remote piece of land where I am trying to grow (unusual) foodplants and flowers. I also give English lessons (TEFL), as I am only starting to try and work in my own field in Spain. For me 'work away' has been about meeting people, making friends, trying to balance between giving and receiving. If you feel happy helping with working in the garden or general maintenance, or even building, I try to give back by cooking good meals, providing English tuition for whomever would like that, give Mindfulness training or give a sketching workshop. You would work four hours daily and take two days off weekly. Of course you can arrange those hours and free days around to fit in with plans for small trips. All you have to do is communicate about it.
