Region: yogyakarta, klaten, soloHello, my name is Rani. I am working on a team consisting of me (leader), Uki (English teacher), Mrs. Heni ( English teacher), Alga (guide), and Bagus (guide). We are a small group who care about our town's educational system and social life. Simply put, you can say that we want change for the better in our community. Besides teaching at my own school, I also work in a government school in Klaten. It is a quiet town, very close to both Yogyakarta and Solo. I have two daughters at home; my home also serves as a private school for teaching English and primary school lessons. For my school, we desperately need fluent English speakers to help our kids reach their full potential. In exchange for helping me for a few hours, my friends and I will do our best to take you to see interesting and "un-touristy" sites around the Klaten and Yogyakarta area. Klaten is close to many local temples including the huge temple complex of Prambanan. We also take people on trips to local beaches and cultural centers like the shadow puppet and gamelan workshops. We all work on a team that is related to teach English. Some of us are teachers, others are tourist guides. We will take you to both cultural and natural places such as seeing local hand art; there guests will learn how to make batik and lurik. We take guests to swim in the river's naturally clean water. If you wish, you can snorkel, because fish actually live in the river! We can take you cycling to native villages to see the inhabitants carrying out their many activities. There, you can see farmers plant and gather rice. You will also be able to see the buffaloes cultivate soil. Our town locally produces fresh "tahu" (tofu) and "soon" (rice noodle); guests can join the workers to see the process. Our town is near a floating restaurant where we can eat lunch or dinner while all enjoying the beautiful view of Klaten's mountainside!

Region: Coimbra and CentralI run a small outdoor company and farm based in Central Portugal, Oliveira do Hospital. We specialise in canoe and kayak river trips, as well as rock climbing and camping in remote locations.
Region: Pays de la LoireSteve and I (Jane) have been living in France for 10 years and have recently moved to our rural idyll. We have an old farm house, perfectly habitable but in need of some refurbishment; a derelict cottage in need of total renovation; an open barn requiring some remodelling; a workshop fully refurbished and ready to go plus 1.4 hectares (about 4 acres) land, lakes and orchards requiring tlc. Located in the Sunny Vendee we are just under and hour from La Rochelle, Les Sables d’Olonne, Nantes, Poitiers and surrounded by beautiful, typically French villages. In exchange for 25 hours per week 10:00 to 4:00 Monday to Friday or, if you prefer to work a longer day for 4 days 25 hours between 9:00 and 6:00 Monday to Thursday we will provide:- Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner with wine and/or beer plus tea and coffee with cakes and/or biscuits Accommodation can be either in our guest bedroom, or in one of the eco lodges in the grounds depending on availability & season. The lodges (see photo) have a bedroom with a proper bed, a dining area (though you would still take your meals with us) with a fridge, kettle etc and a deck with comfy chairs. There is a shower and toilet block by the house. We would be happy to collect you from La Rochelle airport or a local train station if required. At the weekends we are often out and about visiting local attractions, beaches and fêtes, there are several of these which usually involve eating, drinking and dancing the most notable of which is on 14 July, Bastille Day. You would be most welcome to join us on these occasions. We would anticipate that most of the work would be outside to take advantage of that sunshine, retreating indoors if it gets too hot or decides to rain. We have quite a lot of terracing which needs repairing/rebuilding and land to clear so help with: Stone wall building Pointing with lime mortar Clearing woodland Clearing vegetation Preparing the vegetable garden Tree felling and logging General gardening General building work Housework and cooking – but only if you want to! Obviously instruction will be given should you require it. We would also like to tackle the following one off projects:- Building a pizza oven Making a swimming/fishing platform into the lake Building a composting toilet A natural swimming pool – more of a long term aspiration really! We currently keep chickens for eggs but intend to breed Bresse Bleu chickens and rabbits for meat. We also keep bees and if you are interested and would like to help with bees or animals you would be very welcome. Various preserves will also be made throughout the year and helping with their preparation is also an option. I think it would be fair to say food is a passion with us, we produce our own sausages, salami, hams and bacon; we make cheese, brew beer and smoke our own fish and meats. Currently we have friends who keep free range pigs, sheep and goats but we are considering this for ourselves as well. If you have an interest in learning these skills let us know and we’ll see what we can do. One of our greatest pleasures is eating a plate of food that has been produced entirely by ourselves. Knowing everything that has gone into your food and that it has made very little impact on the planet is quite amazing. We try to live in a sustainable manner, that is, producing what we need with minimal impact on the environment. We cannot say we are 100% there, but in our previous house we were 90% self-sufficient in fruit and veg and the main reason we moved is to enable us to produce our own meat, which we are just embarking so that's a start. We are always trying to find ways of reducing our carbon footprint, minimising waste and recycling what we can. Having said that, we don't believe in making life too hard, and feel that it is possible to be responsible whilst still enjoying life's little luxuries. So come and join us, have some fun and perhaps learn some new skills.
Region: Salt Spring Island, BC, CanadaWe are developing 5 acres on Salt Spring Island in beautiful British Columbia, Canada. We are building new garden areas and improving those that we started over the last 4 years. A lot of the work will be related to digging new areas, planting, mixing soil, etc. We are also requiring the assistance of a carpenter/builder as we have fences and gates to build and we are renovating certain areas of our buildings. We eat very healthy with a lot from our gardens. We are mostly vegetarian. We prefer to take in one worker at a time. We can offer very comfortable accommodations with internet. We have a full bath available in another building. We are a retired couple and have a lot of energy and plans. No children. We live in a very beautiful area near the ocean (5 minutes) and just above the best hiking trails on the island. There is a lot to do here on this island and Vancouver is very close and easy to get to. Most workers that have stayed with us have taken the time to visit Vancouver Island including Victoria, Tofino and other areas directly on the Pacific ocean.
