    Description

Ours is the first and best guesthouse in Taiping and situated in the very heart of the town, in a typical and classic 1930’s shophouse. It is adjacent to the major sights, tourist office/clock tower, banks, money changer, post office, night food market, and other eating places are nearby. The train station is 1.2 km (a 16-minute walk) and the bus station is 850 m (a 10-minute walk) away.

Taiping is a very lovely historic town and has got many attractions e.g. the Lake Gardens, Maxwell Hill, Zoo/Night Safari, Burmese Pool, Mangrove Forest, Charcoal Factories etc. However, we do not get a lot of international tourists. Many tourists only visit Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Melaka, Langkawi, Cameron Highlands and the east coast. Taiping is off the beaten track and a hidden gem in Malaysia. We really think that Taiping deserves more international tourists.

The guesthouse is not too big and we can only accommodate maximum 20 guests. We have two 4-bed-dorms, 1 Twin room 1 Triple room and 2 double rooms. We like to keep it VERY CLEAN, it is our thing. Our scores on OTA websites reflect that.

It is not a blank slate like a lot of hostels. We have a café / lounge space where guests can hang out which we have started selling coffee, tea, craft beers, etc.

We prefer our workawayers to stay at least 1 month.

Taiping is the first township in Malaysia, with many "the first" title in Malaysia. There are many hidden germs awaiting discovery, with interesting history. It has gained more and more spotlights over the years.

Orangutan conservation centre is also near Taiping, in fact we used to have many volunteers of the centre staying with us for ling time.

Taiping is also surrounded by many historic and prehistoric villages, which may take you up to weeks, if not months, to fully explore.

  • Help

    Help

For the area we need help from workawayers are some cleaning work, make up rooms, toilets & bathrooms, laundry and sometimes maybe help to open or close the door of the guest house. If the workawayer have other skills that may be able to help in our guest house that would be great!

We are the known spot in Taiping that receives many foreign tourists, particularly backpackers. We score more than 9 points out of 10 on major OTA, you may check it out on booking.com, TripAdvisor, Agoda, etc.

The helps required are, first to help with housekeeping. It entails sweeping floors then mopping, changing bed sheets, wiping down the pods and dusting, cleaning bathrooms. There is some laundry to do: same easy throw in the towels/sheets, add powder, let the machine do the work, hang on the washing line. This is the daily duties. We split other tasks like some dusting or wiping down of out of reach places once a week.

This help is really easy as the place is cleaned every day. If you have not cleaned before, forget it. Someone who has good common sense can whisk through this in 3 hours.

Second we need help with checking in guests. Word of mouth is important as we are not on the main backpacker trail, though we get quite a few cyclists. So Customer Service is important. A lot of guests extend their stay if they feel comfortable and that is down to friendly and helpful staff. If you can learn a bit about the local area when you come, it would be great i.e. the Lake Gardens, good places to eat, general stuff that you yourself want to know. Just generally being pleasant to guests and trying to help where help is needed.

Opening and closing the guesthouse in the morning and evening may also part of the scope.

Life is pretty easy here. We have that checkout 11am check in 2pm window to do the cleaning though we start it earlier when early checkouts allow. It is a daily grind but over pretty quick. We are easy going as long as the tasks are done.

Join us if you like to take up the challenge.
