Self Sufficient Living in Northern Germany
Description
We (couple, three boys - 20, 18, 11 - and dog) are living on the country side in a small farmer community for six years now. We bought an old farmhouse and are still renovating.
We are living almost self sustained (regarding meat, veggies, electricity and some other stuff) by having a greenhose, big garden, poultry, sheep, pigs, rabbits and bees. We make wine, brew our own beer and are interested in a lot of other old handcrafts. we have a carpenters workshop in one of our barns. A lot of space is available for living and working.
We are both working part time self employed in the internet business. The older boys are at University and not at home very often.
During the whole year we need help in the house, with the animals and in the garden. We also like to share our knowledge about the things we do here (e.g. organic farming, self sustainability)

As a first-time, lone traveler from the US, this was a great place to start learning about another culture. The family is friendly and very helpful, with a very energetic dog! The home-grown food is excellent. The rural countryside is fresh and rejuvenating. The work is fun - plenty of odd jobs to do, from working with the animals and garden more
Parker was our first workawayer - and he gave us a very good start with the "workaway-experience"! He was very helpful and friendly and we had much fun and learned a lot from each other.
I had a great time Working-Away here! I was taking a break from the city and practicing my German. I loved working in the Garden and learning about all the fun different things that one is actually able to make themselves instead of buy! And of course learning how things are done in the countryside was fun. It was a great farming experience more
Cay was a great help in the garden and house during one of the busiest time of the year. We enjoyed having her here! She was able to practise her german well during her stay. Our dog is still missing her.
The workaway experience with the Lufts was wunderbar! I learnt so much about living more self-sufficient. I learnt about baking bread, brewing beer, making pasta, smoking meat, starting a garden, growing vegetables and improved my German speaking greatly. All this alongside a great environment (especially for cycling) and a family always willing more
My time with the Luft family was wonderful! It was my first workaway experience and I could not have asked for anything more. I learnt so many new things about the farm and living a self sustainable life, however, the best part was feeling a part of the family. I always felt at home and welcomed. I shared many laughs and good times at this host more
Sandra and me spent three weeks with the Luft and were great. We felt like at home and part of the family. You can learn many things with this working family who lives almost self-sufficient. In fact, it's a big lesson for everybody and it worths to try. Besides, the environment is great for cycling. Our best wishes for Marcel, Ute, Jan, Jonas, more
I spent about 20 days with the family and I had a really nice time there. They all treated me as one more in the family. The Work was hard but fun and I worked only 5hours a day with the weekends free. The are is really nice and it's great for cycling. I totally recommend this host to everyone, specially if it's gonna be you're first workaway more
I learnt a lot of new things whilst I was living with the Lufts, and it was hard work but an ultimately very rewarding experience! They are both lovely people, and the addition of having other workawayers around also added to the fun of the experience!
This was my first workaway, and it left me feeling great about the concept of the site and the more

The farm was lovely, and the surrounding area was great to bike around. It was really hard work moving the straw from one end of the barn to the other, but we had the afternoons off to explore. It was great to interact with the other workawayer who was there, and sit outside practicing guitar or playing ping pong. Besides a new loathing of straw, more
My experience? I will say, real. Marcel & Ute, & Ben are all simply real and happy. I had a good time on the farm the month I was there. I met the other two sons only briefly and they were solid as well. The Luft's took a bold step to 'Cutaway' from most other distractions in life, and just live. Using the land in a sustainable way, I helped more
There would be a life time of stories to tell, if I was too fully describe my experiance with the Lufts.
But in general, they are very nice, honest and hard working people who put just as much effort in as their workawayers.
I really loved hanging there and learning about so many things, and getting a real chance to meet the people of more

My time with the Lufts was a real adventure, and has left me with lots of happy memories. I spent a little over two weeks with them, and really appreciate having experienced life on a self-sufficient farm and having had the chance to explore this beautiful and tranquil part of the world by bike. There is a real sense of community in Weitsche, with more
Work away at the Luft house hold is a real treat! We arrived in the Lufts small country town in northern Germany with little idea of what we were going to be doing. Marcel and Ute have achieved an incredible amount since they moved to the farm 5 years ago, making themselves nearly fully self sustainable. The accomodation was brilliant, the animals more
