Our summers bring us back to our home in the Limousin, north of Limoges. Lynn is from Boston and Brij is from Mancheter and our adventures have had us teaching in Egypt, Germany, India and now the US. Along with our two boys (eight and five) and cat (the oldest of the three) we enjoy spending our time with both our visiting friends and workaway guests.
Our barn renovation is getting close to completion and we hope to spend the summer of 2014 finishing up and moving in.
Our workaway visitors have continued to bring a positive energy to our summer holiday. They have been easy going, hard working and willing to dive into our summer life as much as we have been willing to learn from and get to know them.
We live on a beautiful remote riverside farm in the Klein Karoo semi-arid region of South Africa. We are located in the Western Cape Province.
Our dream is to create a retreat for artists and nature lovers on a
permaculture and organic small holding. Life on the farm is all about
doing things differently and looking after nature and each other. Our
passions include reducing consumption and encouraging personal autonomy and happiness.
The farm is recovering from over grazing and a more recent 5 year period of intensive ostrich farming. We have been here since February 2010 and have been developing the farm into our dream – a retreat for artists and nature lovers, on an organic permaculture small-holding. Our farm is 100ha, and beyond the “small holding” (our house, gardens and outbuildings) you will find large open spaces, hills and small cliffs, riverine thicket, rock formations, fossils and beautiful views of the distant mountain ranges. We are a family of three with about 50 chickens, 5 cats and 2 sheepdogs.
We live at the bottom of the Canterbury foothills on a small farm with our three children, two girls (7 and 5 years) and a boy (2 years). We moved into our newly build house last year and there are plenty of things going on around the place to keep us busy.
We live about 60 kms from Christchurch near the main highway between Christchurch and the West Coast. We are only 30 minutes from the closest skifield and are surrounded by many lakes, rivers and walkways.
Susan works fulltime in Christchurch so can provide a ride in on most days if required.
We all enjoy meeting new people and learning about other cultures and see this as a great opportunity to show our children that there are lots of people out there who live differently to us.
Access to education is not granted to every child in Nepal. Our team aims at providing a partial remedy to that unfortunate situation by offering proper nutrition, a comfortable lodging and a tuition to children from the Ganesh and Lantang area at no cost to the family.
Even though our government has made significant progress in the last decade to build new schools throughout the country, the lack of formal teachers in many rural districts of Nepal is a major obstacle for children to access education. On that matter, the Ganesh and the Langtang regions – about 120 km north of Kathmandu – have not been favored. Only a small fraction of the children can buy their places in the few schools that have been established.
We are presently hosting five children, all coming from different families, in the hope of giving them a chance to have a better future and, at the same time, fulfilling their parent’s most sacred wish. Our organization lives on donations from individual sponsors and your help, even if not pecuniary, is of great worth to us and to the children. Being away from their family undoubtedly affects the children, but knowing that some people care for them and put great efforts in their success is of an invaluable comfort.
Everyone staying with us will experience the Nepalese culture, will have the opportunity to learn a little bit of the language and get a glimpse of the lifestyle and the traditions of Nepal. You will also be able to build your own judgement regarding Nepal's education system.
We provide a safe environment to the children and to the volunteers in order for them to fully appreciate their stay.
