Description

Located in Ocotepeque in western Honduras, near the El Salvador and Guatemala borders, My Bilingual School is the only fully bilingual school in the area and serves students from preschool to 8th grade. Spanish, natural science, social studies, math, and art are taught by local Honduran teachers, and English classes including phonics, reading, grammar, and spelling are taught by volunteers from all over the world. You do not need to have experience teaching to volunteer; you just need to be a fluent English speaker, love kids, and be willing to work hard and be patient. Room and board and three meals a day are provided to volunteers with a commitment of six months or more, and volunteers stay in a volunteer house just blocks from the school. It is also a great way to improve your Spanish.

Volunteers' work may vary, depending on the current needs of the school--how many students are enrolled and how many volunteers the school has at the moment . Volunteers could teach any of the four areas of English given at the school--phonics, reading, grammar, and spelling--to any of the grades at the school, from preschool to 8th grade. School runs from 6:45am to 1pm, but volunteers' schedules can vary, according to the volunteer's preference and the needs of the school.
Additionally, Ocotepeque is a safe and quiet town located about 10 minutes from the El Salvador border and about 50 from the Guatemala border, and there are many tourist attractions in the area where volunteers often travel to, including the Mayan ruins at Copan, famous church at Esquipulas, Guatemala, the Pacific coast of El Salvador, and more.

Logement

Autres choses...

Carol, a mother of three, had always wanted to give her children, and others in Ocotepeque, the chance to grow up speaking English. Knowing how important the English language can be to Hondurans, Carol acted upon her desire. In 1998, with the help of her mother, long-time teacher Alba Gloria Penman, Carol started the school. What started off as a kindergarten with a dozen students has now become a full-bilingual elementary and secondary school educating over 100 students up to 8th grade. Since its founding, the school has expanded to occupy two buildings, and the staff is hoping to expand yet again in the near future as soon as they gather the resources.

The School remains standing today thanks to the tremendous support of the parents, who entrusted us with the education of their children when we were just a project, along with the many people who have donated their time and money to help arm our children with the English language. Thanks to those contributions, we have been able to to keep our tuition extremely low, and and we continue to offer scholarships to a large portion of our students, extending the benefits of a bilingual education to children who might not otherwise have the opportunity to attend such a school.
