Come and help us protect and care for a rare breed of pony on Skyros.
Description
Myself , my partner, and a friend run a conservation, education and welfare project with a rare breed of pony the small skyrian horse on the beautiful and unspoilt island of Skyros. We are always looking for volunteers who are either - experienced with ponies and who are interested in helping to care and train our herd of very sweet natured, highly intellegent ponies or - enjoy and have experience of farm/ smallholding work. If you love ponies you will really enjoy your stay with us. We are based on a small farm which is near the sea and pine forest, in a traditional Greek area.

Travail
Most of the work is centred around our herd of very friendly skyrian ponies. Mucking out fields , feeding, watering, grooming, handling the ponies. Helping with the upkeep of fences, stables etc. For volunteers with experience of ponies there are lots of opportunities to get involved with training- lungeing, long reining and if you are small and light weight enough and also experienced as a rider opportunities to ride. .
We do have spaces for volunteers who are not experienced with ponies but want to learn and also there are projects in the garden , fencing , chickens etc. This summer 2012 we will be starting a straw bale dwelling project we hope.

The main village is small but has two internet cafes two musuems and good cafes and bars. It is very attractive and still traditional. There is limited public transport and if you want to explore the island especially off season the best way is walking or borrowing a bike , hitching or hiring a moped or car.We will also gives you lifts when we are going into the village etc.

Florence is a charming, kind, honest, hardworking and strong young woman. She was a delight to have at the farm - being a calm, unflustered and gentle presence. She has a natural way with all animals and was a great help with the ponies. We would welcome her back at any time.
I stayed a month on the farm in April and May. It was my first workaway experience, and it was amazing - I felt welcome and at home from the minute I got there. They really look after you and make a huge effort to make sure you have a good time. There can't be a better place to work with horses - you're able to be around them the whole time if you more
I spent a month on the farm, from April - May; it was my first workaway experience and it was great! I felt welcome from the moment I arrived on the farm. The ponies are lovely, really friendly, and getting to know each one is brilliant. The mucking out was hard work but so worthwhile, and I spent the rest of the time playing with the ponies and more
Ronja and Benoit Fantastic volunteers, we would have them back again tomorrow. Positive, hardworking, honest, self motivated, creative, reliable and responsible with lovely personalities to match. If they are the young people of tomorrow, then the world is going to be a better place.
I would have no hesitation in saying they are two of the best more

Well, stop. Just go!
Since the moment we were picked up from the port, I enjoyed every single second of our stay.
And this is not an exaggeration, I ensure you.

An amazing experience with amazing people (and ponies)! The Skyrian ponies may be small, but they have more than enough personality to make them a fun challenge for all horse people. The atmosphere at the farm is very relaxed, and I found the work to be not to difficult. Thanks for a fantastic time! I hope someday I'll be back. :)
Elizabeth was great...incredibly mature, self motivated, responsible grounded, yet dynamic 18 year old who has excellent ground skills with horses and would be an asset as a volunteer to any host with horses ponies or dogs. It was a real pleasure to have her to volunteer we just wish it could have been longer.
I stayed in Stathis and Amanda's farm in the summer of 2010 for 2 wonderful months. I experienced their love and care for animals, in fact words cannot express the family like environment...
They live on donations and they deserve every last penny given to them because they truly love what they do.
I had the chance to see the births of foals, more

Me and my boyfriend had an amazing time here! After a month on the farm I didn't even wanted to go back home again. Work, fun and free time are well balanced. Lovely people who make you feel very much at home. If you're experienced with horses you get to do a lot of fun things with the horses. Working with the Skyrian horses is great. They are more
Having Ananda and Hans at the farm was a blessing. They were both wonderful people who worked hard, were mature , responsible, imaginative, resourceful, independent and really became part of our family. Ananda was fantastic with the horses and I hope she learnt as much from me as she taught me. This was an experience of having volunteers where it more
