Looking for Energetic Volunteers to Enjoy Hawaiian Life on the Big Island (NOT Oahu).

------------------PLEASE NOTE - We get many request for Oahu area. We are NOT ON the island of OAHU where Waikiki Beach and Honolulu is located.
    Requirements:
•••••For 2+ people traveling together & over 21 yrs old ONLY!!
    •••••NO SMOKERS
•••••Volunteers ONLY +++++++on the Big Island Only (NOT Oahu)

    • Typical Week Summary:
Work week is 20 to 25 hours per person.
Time as a workaway will be helping around the properties and learning. We do not live on a typical farm, but we do have 6 acres the we are developing into sustainable living. The landscape around our home is all lava, some grass. Some say, It looks like we live on the moon. Turning lava into gardens and work space. There is heavy lifting at times.

We work with your touring schedule to help you explore the island. So you can work all hours for 3 days and take 4 days off to enjoy the island. Some work in the mornings and take off to enjoy the day. We are flexible unless we need your help for a special project. Our focus is for the workdays to enjoy and explore the island. So if there is nothing to do, we hope to see you off exploring the island. When we get invites to gatherings to our friends places, we invite our workaways to join us.

    • Brew Day
Brewing a 5 gallon batch takes about 6 hours, from start to clean-up.  Moments of boredom will be occupied with discussion of brewing history and processes and applications.

    • Kau District
Our town is not a very touristy, many visitors stop for supplies, eat at our local restaurants, shop at our 3 grocery stores or get gas when heading to or from Hilo or Kona. The area also has many outdoor markets, culture events, lava tubes hike, short drive to beaches and many parks like the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Kahuku Unit, Green Sand beach, South Point, Manuka State Wayside, Whittington Beach, Black Sand Beach, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and more.

    • Home
Our property has an ocean view spanning 25 plus miles of ocean and to infinity straight ahead. To the left, South Point and right is Road to the Sea. The lava flow is from 1300’s. We enjoy the quiet atmosphere and cool breezes of Kau. We spend our day working on projects, going to the beach, attending culture functions, visiting and helping neighbors, going to town for supplies and adventures, driving around the island, running over to the park when the lava is flowing and other fun. We also enjoy playing cribbage and teaching it also. So we invite our visitors to join us in playing cribbage. Our projects at home end about 3pm Pau Hana (end of work day) begins. We gather for sunsets, as they are a treasure filled with a green flash sometimes.

    • Sustainable
The properties are COMPLETELY off grid and on restricted water supply and electric. We use solar to supply our electric and rain for water collection. We request everyone to not use items with heating elements such as blow dryers, hot irons for hair. Washer is available

Learn how the locals live in Hawaii. Enjoy the culture of the people in Ocean View and explore Hilo's rich historical past. Kaʻū is the southernmost district of Hawaii County, Hawaii, located on the island of Hawaiʻi.
Kaʻū is one of the six original districts of Hawaii on the island. It includes the areas of South Point (Ka Lae), Hawaiian Ocean View Estates (HOVE), Hawaiian Ocean View Ranchos (HOVR), now together known as Ocean View. The district contains much of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, including the volcanoes Kīlauea and Mauna Loa, and Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach, Papakōlea (Green Sand) Beach and Kamilo Beach. To the east of Kaʻū is the Puna District, and to the west is the South Kona District. Sugar cane was a large crop until 1996. Now coffee is growing in importance, with the Kaʻū Coffee Festival held in Pāhala. The southernmost point of the US is at Ka Lae Point in the Kaʻū District.

Current Projects: Volunteers would help with painting, gardening, concrete work, weeding, electric, plumbing, property maintenance and building, small construction projects, moving lava rocks, and learning about being off grid by maintaining batteries, solar panels, and DC lighting. Also learning the science of brewing beer, making bread, pasta and more. Sometimes there are community projects (like beach clean up) we get involved in, it's a great way to help and meet others in the neighborhood.

Greenhouse Start-up: Vegetable are grown in a controlled environment in our greenhouse house. We are in the beginning stages of developing our own system for vegetables and fruit. Volunteers would learn how the system works, help move plants, plant new ones and learn what plants grow in a media or water only.

Solar Powered: All electric power is generated by solar panels and stored in a bank of batteries. Volunteers would learn how the system works, test the batteries for efficiency, help keep the batteries clean and refresh the water in the batteries.

Artistry: There are many surfaces for you to paint and create your next masterpiece. We love when workaways leave their personal touch on a wall, floor, doors, and ceilings.

Brewing Beer Project : We make our beer in a very traditional "Homebrew" style, paying more attention to flavor than appearance. It's also important to note that the project is "off grid".. We have a small, 10 gallon (maximum), gravity driven system with the ability to do step-mash's and decoctions. Beer is enjoyed by us and friends it’s not for sale.

Wrigley: Are you a dog lover?? If you have any fear for dogs, do NOT apply.
Wrigley enjoys visitors. We also rely on our volunteers to watch the boys on some occasions when we need to go to town. Wrigley enjoys walks and loves to chase a ball. He sleeps with us and go everywhere we go unless someone can stay home and watch them.

Remote living: Couple or two volunteers that enjoy solitude due to our location being very remote. This would best suit volunteers who like being in a "remote area" of the Big Island. We live in Ocean View 1.5 hours from the big towns of Hilo and Kona. We live a few miles from 3 grocery stores and gas stations, restaurants, a swap meet every Saturday and 25 minutes from South Point. Closes town is Naalehu, home to many restaurants and Punalu`u Bake Shop. We are also located an hour from the National Volcano Park. Volunteers can use the Heleon bus to go to Hilo, Kona or circle the island, we can give you a lift up the hill to catch the bus and pick you up on your return.

Cooking: We enjoy cooking but also enjoy when volunteers come in and take over our kitchen once a week to share your style of food with us. Help us cook meals and teaching us new ways to cook and new foods. We use the pellet grill as an oven and pizza oven to make pizzas and as a fire place. When working with Cheryl & Mike, a meal is provided that day by Cheryl & Mike.

Sharing: We encourage volunteers to bring their talents and share with us. In the past our place has been host to artist, musicians, landscapers, construction engineers, amateur chief and around the world travelers.
