    Description

The Ibiti has over 6,000 hectares of land that encircles the state park of Ibitipoca. 40 years ago, 90% of this land was used as pasture. Today, we are working on converting this land back to Atlantic Forest, a biodiversity hotspot, home to numerous endangered endemic species and one of the most endangered biomes in the world.

We have a number of different social and environmental projects aiming to restore the fauna and flora, bring environmental education to the members of the community, develop the region economically, and so on. The opportunities to volunteer with these projects are as wide ranging as the projects themselves. We are very open to bright brains and new ideas, so please do not be afraid to contact us and have a conversation to explore possibilities and projects.

We are an open laboratory for anyone who has interesting ideas that fit in with our philosophies and wants to try something new.

Our project is located in a very special area of Brazil. The state of Minas Gerais is famous for its people, food, and natural beauty. Locals are kind, outgoing and very receptive. Our community dates back to 1692, it is older than Tiradentes and Ouro Preto. The State Park next to Ibitipoca is consistently considered one of the best parks in Brazil and is a true national treasure. Furthermore, volunteers will have the opportunity to get-to-know and interact with the visitors and workers from a variety of backgrounds at the Ibiti Projeto.

Next to the state park of Ibitipoca is a small tourist-based community that is active on the weekends with restaurants, stores, and live music. The population there is around 800 people. There are also the smaller communities of Lopes (200 people) and Mogol (20 people) which are very culturally interesting, historical, and have beautiful natural landscapes. Within the Comuna there are many trails to explore and waterfalls to swim in.

Buses run out of the nearest town of Lima Duarte, which has a population of over 16,000 people. Lima Duarte is 28km from the Comuna and it is where you can access banks and other services.

From Rio de Janeiro, you can take a bus to Juiz de Fora, where you can take another bus to Lima Duarte. We try our hardest to find rides to and from the Ibiti for volunteers.
