This was my first experience helpx-ing and they made it a great one. I spent two weeks helping around the house. Cooking, some cleaning, a little bit in the garden and getting organised for the festivals, sorting stock as it arrived. I was able to go to one festival with them. It was very busy and hard work, but an amazing experience and they will always listen and answer questions. They are experienced hosts and I really liked how clear and well explained everything they required of me was. It made the whole time run very smoothly. Julie and I spent a day visiting local gardens and went out for tea and cake several times. I got to visit some of the surrounding area, including a church in Huish Espiscopi where my several great grandparents got married. Julie and Marcus are really easy to get along with and we had lots of laughs and jokes. I always felt really comfortable in their house. They are great hosts and I would recommend them to anyone :) Add Reply / Comment Helper: Richard and Kayleigh Profile: click here From: United Kingdom Date: June 1, 2014 Our stay with Julie was very comfortable. We spent most evenings chatting by the fire with a glass of wine. Julie was very accommodating and welcomed us with a hug straight away! The work there was a little repetitive but the job we were doing has been finished now so don't worry about that! :) The hours are also very fair and we were well fed. Also if something came up within the week that we were interested in doing she was totally flexible with our work hours. We also met and helped out the community quite a lot with gardening for an elderly couple, walking dogs and doing the traffic census for the village. This meant we got to meet a lot of really nice and interesting people. On our days off we went to the village fair, visited Glastonbury and Street, went out for lunch a few times and had a few lovely walks. If you're interested in horses then Julie is more than happy to share her knowledge in that department and she let us ride her lovely pony Bella a few times! We didn't get to know Marcus that well because he only just got back from India as we were leaving but he was very friendly and easy to get on with. Its a shame that we were not able to do the festivals, but we wish you the best of luck with them! Thank you Julie and Marcus for having us in your home :) Add Reply / Comment Helper: Andrian and Monica Profile: click here From: Moldova Date: April 21, 2014 This was our first experience as helpers and it couldn't have been better. We stayed for 5 days, unfortunately we had to be back, but we would have liked to stay longer. All this time we were with Julie and another couple as Marcus was away. The work was varied, and we were always made to feel like our contribution was valued no matter the size of the task. Julie made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived (she picked us up from the station and dropped on the way back too) and she was more than willing to talk and share her life with us. Her house was also highly accommodating to our specific food needs, we were all the time told to eat as much as we like and let her know if we wanted something else. We can only express words of gratitude for all that we have lived in their house. They live in a beautiful village and we miss getting up every morning and see those quiet and wonderful views but we will miss the people we have met there too. We felt like a real member of the house, where anything could be talked about openly and honestly. We had a great time there and we will go again when the opportunity arises. Thank you very much Julie, you have been a great host. Add Reply / Comment Helper: Heidi Ashby Profile: click here From: New Zealand Date: January 19, 2014 Julie and Marcus are wonderful! I worked a festival season with them last summer and helpx'd at their home in between. It was a great experience, they made me feel very at home, never worked us too hard and made a huge effort to show us around their part of the country. They are very accommodating and easy to get along with as well as being very interesting, well-travelled and well-rounded people. My time with them was very rewarding and enlightening and I would highly recommend working or staying with them (or both). You will not regret it! Thank you for everything guys=) Add Reply / Comment Helper: Alicia Silvester Profile: click here From: United Kingdom Date: February 20, 2013 I have worked for Julie and Marcus at festivals for the last 4 summers and loved every minute of it ! I have made friends for life with them and could not recommend them enough. Moving from festival to festival means you never get bored and its always exciting. Putting up the stall is hard work at the begining of each festival but Julie always calls for a tea break just as you need one, though you need to be prepared to work in whatever the weather ! Julie and Marcus are interesting people who are well traveled and have an amazing lifestyle and were willing to teach me some yoga inbetween work. Their house is lovely and homely with mementoes of their travels everywhere. They have a nice back garden and on a summers evening we'd often sit round the firepit in their garden with a beer and maybe even some sparklers ! Working a summer with Julie and Marcus will give you so many amazing memories :) Thank you ! Mostly travelling with their summer festival stall, but also I tended to helpx in their home for a day after each festival had ended. They treated me with respect the whole time I stayed with them and always thanked me for my time. They took us all out on day trips and often went out of their way to give me a lift, or do my laundry at times when I wasn't even helpxing. I made some great friends and learned many skills here. Thanks for a crazy and happy summer! :) Add Reply / Comment Helper: Judith Narramore Profile: click here From: United Kingdom Date: September 17, 2012 I stayed with Marcus & Julie for a week, helping out moving & storing their end of season stock. I then tidied the gardens and trimmed the hedges ready for the over-wintering. Although not a large place there is ALWAYS something to do, and all help is more than well appreciated. Julie & Marcus are a lovely happy, well-travelled couple who are fun and a pleasure to help. Anyone going there will truly enjoy their experience. From the first day I felt at home, as they are a welcoming couple with open minds. Also, they are full of life and have a great sense of humor. They eat plentiful, healthy food, and the accommodation felt like home. Their garden is beautiful with a nice view from it to the fields behind. The tasks were varied so the work stays interesting. They showed me around the area and took me to many other special places around England and Wales. We also went running, cycling and walking to keep fit and feel good. They practise yoga (when they get time!) In short, they have been great hosts and I've had a unique experience with them. And what a fabulous time it was!!!!! We did various tasks including building maintenance and general house repairs, housework, cooking, laminated price tickets and sorted garments for the music festival stall. While there, we were able to explore the area and visit many delightful little villages including Cheddar, famous for it’s cheeses (maturing in the caves) and Cheddar Gorge. We also visited southern towns of Weymouth, Abbotsbury and Lyme Regis. We went walking with Julie and Marcus on one of the many hiking tracks, through lush pastures, past many curious cows and along winding country roads. We also had a lovely day out with them, when they took us to Stourhead, a grand estate about ½ hour from Curry Rivel. As they are both vegetarians, we ate very healthily. Julie makes really delicious vegie shepherd’s pie and pizzas . Her ‘slugs’ (made from fruits, nuts and various other yummy ingredients) will have you feeling really alive. Mmmmm, yum!!!!!! Marcus and Julie are an absolutely amazing couple, who are very genuine, considerate, warm and funny. They have travelled extensively and have many tales to tell of their adventures. Marcus loves playing Scrabble and is always up for a game challenge. Julie is a great yoga enthusiest. And we both share fond memories of these activities shared with them. We would like to thank them for welcoming us into their home and showing us such wonderful hospitality. We arrived as strangers, but left as friends. If we visit England, in the future, we would definitely stay with Julie and Marcus, again, and would highly recommend them.
