Region: Langkawi, Malaysia. Malaysia is the eldest jungle of this globe, dating back something like 130 million years. Although Langkawi is not a snorcheling or diving hot spot - due to sediment rich waters - there are plenty of things to see. Some of this original rain forest is covering the mountains, trekking is a good idea. Birdwatchers come from all over the world to see the many eagles etc. hornbills run riot even downtown. There is a breathtaking ride on a swiss built cable car, an abundance of waterfalls and world heritage parks with spectacular mangrove forests. We are a German family and have been building a traditional wooden Malaysian Junk-Schooner, the Naga Pelangi (Rainbow Dragon). The boat is built in an ancient building technique, using wooden dowels and caulking bark. This technique is only practiced in the Malay cultural area. It is a dying art. I had a boat of this type built in 1980 and sailed it round the world. This boat is a much bigger version and we want to establish it as a charter vessel in Malaysia. Naga Pelangi is the only boat of her kind sailing in Malaysia. Since November 2010 the boat is sailing and now stationed in Langkawi, an island group on the West coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Here we are mostly on standby and waiting for charterwork. We do maintenance work, sanding, varnishing, painting, standard upkeep and volunteers can experience life on a traditional wooden sailing boat in a beautiful tropical setting. We are offering 2 - 4 places for people to help us maintain and sail this historical vessel. No sailing skills required, but a will to work and an ability and a liking for manual labour. Volunteers should be physically fit and trained - no couch potatoes! We expect our volunteers to share in the food cost if no money is coming in through charter. Now, end of the year we have finished our works in the boatyard and are back at our station in Langkawi.
Region: Ansteys Beach, Bluff, Durban, Kwazulu Natal, South AfricaHello from sunny South Africa! We are a happy, easygoing surfing family who have owned and run our backpackers hostel for the past 14 years. This is a friendly, happy place with a great cosmopolitan vibe. We cater for backpackers, holiday makers and business people, which makes for a great and interesting mix of people! Our place is situated on the main beach on the Bluff, a suburb about 15 minutes drive from the Durban City Centre. The beach is a quick 30 metres from our front door :) We offer surf lessons and reasonably priced shuttles, there is a small surf shop as well as a fantastic little on-site cafe/coffee shop run by our daughter, which serves great filter coffee, breakfasts and delicious home baked treats. We are looking for someone who is willing to stay for 3 months or more and who would work about 25 hours per week. While it is a happy and relaxed place, it does get pretty busy at times, especially during peak seasons and we would require someone who is a friendly, people's person, hands-on, proactive and able to deal with difficult guests from time to time. This is not just a backpackers hostel as we have self catering apartments and we do get a lot of South African holiday makers that stay here, especially over weekends and during school holidays - that is when it gets really busy. We have systems in place that we are strict about following to ensure the smooth running of things at our hostel.
Region: BasilicataWe are a friendly, married English, young at heart couple who have built our own luxury Masseria in southern Italy where we now enjoying early retirement (but we are by no means in the slippers brigade!) We chose this part of the world because of our love of real Italian culture, food and wine. Life can't get any better than down in the south where we experience 'real' Italy every single day that we are here. Everything from the slow pace of life to discovering living life as it was years ago. We love our food and grow much of our own produce from which my husband (the chef of the two of us), creates wonderful meals. I am not so creative in the kitchen but I do enjoy baking. We are situated in a beautiful, rural location, with the house sitting on its own 9 acre hill with the most amazing 360 degree views across rolling countryside. The nearest town is Montescagliso which is a ten minute drive away. The nearest city is Matera, which is famous for being the film location for Mel Gibsons Passion of the Christ. Matera became nominated as a Unesco World Heritage site in 1993 and is a 15 minute drive away. It's a bustling city with lots of bars, restaurants, coffee shops anof course great shopping. Matera consists of the old town known as the Sassi where people have dwelled in caves for 4000 years. The new part of the city is where you find the modern day shops. It's an amazing place to explore if you enjoy cultural experiences, history and architecture. There are also jaw dropping landscapes if you enjoy painting or photography.
Region: Languedoc RoussillonWe are an English couple in the south of France with 2 young friendly dogs and busy day jobs. We moved into a lovely old French house in November 2012. It was built in 1810 so there's plenty to do! and we would really appreciate at least 1 or 2 extra pairs of hands to help us progress things.
