Our concept with the establishment of our Health Retreat was the creation of an holistic health retreat for fasting, detoxification, cleansing and purification of body, mind and spirit. We had personally experienced the wonderful individual benefits of yoga and meditation, juice fasting, colon cleansing, proper nutrition, holistic therapies and the combination of all these in the proper environment would create a unique package, not offered anywhere else, for the elimination of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual impurities and imbalances, for detoxification and cleansing, thereby allowing your system to establish perfect health, which we always endeavour to do.
It is important to mention, that this is clearly a Health Retreat, our guests always come first, although we all live and work together, the focus is on the Retreat Centre and not on living together as a community.
So it is important the people who come here will look propper, for example no piercings or dreadlocks.

So especially skillfull people (we are very much looking for Shivananda-Yoga-teachers!!) are very welcome.
But if you're not skilled don't worry we have lots to do and you'll learn quickly because it's all natural and not complicated....Cleaning, Juicing, Vegetable gardening are all part of our daily delights...
For organizational reasons we decided to divide the volunteers now in the areas house (cleaning, juicing and cooking), garden (as we are creating many new permaculture beds right now, a bit of digging every day, but also planting, weeding and lots of other stuff) and maintenance (chicken, compost bins, cleaning leaves out of the swimming pool, lots of other stuff also). If you have any special skills that don't ly in any of these areas, we are happy if you let us know, so that we can maybe make a use of that!
Please let us know in your application, if you prefer to be a house, a maintenance or a garden volunteer. Thank you!! :-)
People in the field of Yoga, Meditation and Natural therapies please come and share your energy here with us too! AT THE MOMENT WE ARE ESPECIALLY LOOKING FOR SOMEONE WHO KNOWS ABOUT MECHANICS. We have limited staff accommodation so please book in advance.
For honest exchange of 6hr of work each day with two days off per week. We ask all our volunteers to have no problems with drugs or alcohol and they must be non-smokers!!
Poeple who come here should also have a driving license.
As we all live together here, we wish that the people who come are considerate of common areas and keep them always tidy and clean. We are no cleaning freaks, but with so many people it's necessary to be really aware of staying clean.
This place is a vegetarian place and all our meals are vegetarian, but you don’t need to be a vegetarian when you are not here.
We ask for a minimum stay for two months.
English, Portugese, Norwegian, German
Small and simple rooms with shared bathroom, with linen provided. It is also possible to share a bigger bedroom. We have free internet but please be aware there is no mobile telephone signal. There is a staff car for use on your day off, if it's not otherwise needed. The kitchen and cooking are shared by all live-in staff and volunteers.
What else ...
We are an established holistic retreat centre and seek people who are mindful and appreciative. Young travellers, who understand the principles of living in a wellness, yoga and meditative centre. Our guests are the most vital key to our business and we are all here to serve them to the best of our ablities, therefore the work we put into the centre is extremely important.

Judith is the best person to have in your house!! She has always a good mood, is so warm and funny and you can talk with her about everything. She also loves baking and helps with everything needed all the time!! If you don't meet her, you miss something. While she was here she helped with almost everything. Although we gave her a certain amount more

The Health Retreat is a truly magical and healing place. I arrived expecting to spend a quick month in the sun before heading back to the US, and I ended up staying for 3 of the most beautiful months of my life. The land and the buildings here are gorgeous, the oranges are unlike anything I've ever tasted before, but what really makes this place more
Michelle was here more than one year ago, and we had many volunteers in the meantime. But we all still remember her and would be greatfull to have her back. She is one of the most open people, willing to try everything and always keep an open mind. She is also very patient and very nice to be around her. We all wish her all the best and hope to more

"Excellent" doesn't even discribe nearly how wonderfull Emma is. Words would still need to be invented to discribe her fully. She is so open and confident and loving, happy, enthusiastic, hard working, singing, joking, caring, most responsible person in the world, and many more things. I would trsut her with my life. Her outside beauty mirrors her more

The day I was picked up at the bus station in Lagos I never could have imagined the experience I would have in Portugal. I can say with complete honesty that the three and a half months I lived and volunteered at Moinhos Velhos were the best months of my entire life. If my Canadian passport didn't force me to leave I would still be there today! more

First and only work away experience I have done. The most phenomenal place in the world. The work here is expected, either cleaning or in the garden, but with incomparable perks. The retreat allows the volunteers to participate in yoga and meditation, allows them to use the staff car, and gives the most phenomenal opportunity to meet new friends. more
Anyone who meets Lizzy will be happy for the rest of his live! She is the most positive, enthusiastic, hard working, loving and strong young girl!! The moment she arrived everybody felt happy, and we enjoyed every second of her beeing here. She is extremly helpfull and does everything we ask her for and more, and she also was a big contrbution to more

We spent 3 wonderful weeks, which went by so quickly, at Mohinos Velhos. It's a wonderful place and we had a fantastic time. Everyone involved with the health retreat, all our fellow workawayers and even the dogs, were absolutely lovely. This was our first workaway experience and it just couldn't have been any better. The work was varied and more

This was my first Workaway experience, and I couldn't have asked for a better one! I stayed for two weeks and they went by much too quickly. The work was fair, food was wonderful, people were great, and the location is just amazing. I hope to be back again sometime!
thank you so much for everything you have done here! Your calm and positive energy was a great contribution to our team, and we felt that there was someone important missing after you left. We were also especially happy about the computer-knowledge you had to offer!! We wish you all the best and hope to see you back in September. :-)

I was here for 2 weeks and had a wonderful time. Soon after my arrival, I could really feel the Divine and sacred energies of this place. The work was well organised, productive, but also generally at quite a relaxed pace and easy going, which was nice. I enjoyed cooking with my fellow workawayers, sharing my recipes, and also learning some more

Emma´s energy and bright attitude make her an ideal member of any team. The time she spent here & work she offered was an absolute asset & she was a pleasure to have around for her stay at this healing retreat center.

I arrived in September and ended up staying for three months! Beautiful place with lovely people :) I really enjoyed getting mucky in the garden and cooking with food pulled straight out of the ground was a real treat. I loved it so much, I may even be going back in 2012 :)
The months Sarah spent here were full of vibrant efforts at all duties that were put in front of her.... cooking, cleaning, gardening, dealing with client needs, helping with computer & administration ++++. A very hard worker with a sunny, bright attitude makes her a good candidate for future hosts.
Frankie was a great asset to the team here at , she was always willing to help and was not a clock watcher.
~She cooked some amazing food and her carrot cake was to die for!!
Her bubbly personality had people smiling all day. She is missed and would be welcomed back if she was ever in this neck of the woods again. Good luck Frankie

This was our first Workaway experience and we couldn't have asked for more. We stayed for 2 weeks working mainly in the garden: weeding, clearing and building little stone walls. The work wasn't too difficult - especially with the sun shining every day and a nice swim or sauna to end the days with! Everyone really made us feel part of the team more

We value greatly the contribution made by Sam and Phil during their two weeks with us. They are both focussed hard working and have a lively sense of humour. They both fitted in to our small community really quickly and we appreciated their quick learning, enthusiasm and initiative. We found them to be really kind ,considerate and non judgemental more
