NGO situated in a refugee camp in Bethlehem
Pays: Israel
Last Activity: 05.10.2013
Description
We were established in 2002 as a non-governmental organisation situated in Deheishe Refugee Camp, Bethlehem in the West Bank. The organisation Karama works independently and is not affiliated with any political party or movement. Since the outbreak of the second Intifada in September 2000 the inhabitants of the camp have been surrounded by an environment of violence, devastation, poverty, hatred and despair.
The occupation has negatively affected every Palestinian's life, with children suffering some of the worst effects. They have lost feelings of hope, happiness and peace. Moreover, these children grow up without the privileges of gardens, playgrounds, libraries and youth centres. This results in them having to be confined to their small living spaces as the streets of Deheishe have no space for fun.
Palestinians are deprived of basic needs for their families and have lost their taste of life.
In these adverse circumstances our centre in Deheishe Refugee Camp is considered an oasis which provides a safe haven for women, children and adolescents offering them support and services to excel in many fields. These range from counselling and education to cultural awareness.
Since we opened we have received many volunteers from all over the world and from a variety of cultural backgrounds. There are many ways that volunteers can participate at Karama, such as by giving English lessons, sharing computer skills, musical or artistic talents, lecturing about democracy, human rights issues or other topics important for the development of our children. Volunteers are also greatly needed for administrative tasks, as well as fundraising.
By visiting us in Deheishe you will have the chance to experience and explore Palestinian culture first hand. You will see for yourself the effects of the occupation and see how life in the West Bank goes on. There is no better way to learn about the conflict in Palestine and we guarantee that your time with us will be much more than your average volunteering experience.
We are open to hearing your suggestions for alternative ways that you, as a volunteer, may be interested in working with and educating our children through workshops, etc.
