Work
We are looking for someone to come and live with us for 3-6 months in 2010 to help us with various tasks around the ranch, in exchange for getting to know our family, our local culture, and have opportunities for horseback riding and/or improving horsemanship skills. The lodging for our volunteer would be in a 22 foot bumper pull camper we purchased last year, it is a 1992 and is in good condition. It has a separate bedroom in the rear, and its own bathroom, so you would have your own private space, although not that large, it has a kitchen, couch and chair. We have to this date not had any employees other than our family, which is my parents, my husband and I, and our 2 children Katie and Trevor, who will be turning 10 and 12 this coming summer. So this is a new venture for us.
We have guests from April thru October, and have had people from 48 states and over 15 other countries here at the ranch. We are looking for someone who is open to a variety of tasks, both indoor and outdoor, and who is flexible in their work hours – meaning that the hours might be 2-3 in the morning and 2-3 in the evening rather than 5 straight. With our ala carte pricing system, every day is slightly different as what needs to be done. Helping with cooking and baking will be probably be half or more of the job. That will be more intense in the summer months, and in the spring and fall, it will be more of a variety and could include time spent gardening, painting, stacking dead branches in the creek bottom/pasture to improving grazing for the horses. Horseback riding would be outside of the 25 hours of work time, and would come out of your free time. You would have access to our library of natural horsemanship materials . We are also hoping to building a new tack room this spring, and might involve helping with that, so carpentry experience would be a plus, put not required, nor do we expect you to operate power tools.
Lastly, you will be working alongside of our children as well as Jeff and I, and so if you enjoy children or have experience with them, that would be a plus. There would be times you would be in a supervisory role for certain tasks for example, making beds, and setting the tables for meals.
We have a wide variety of people who come to our ranch, singles, couples, families, and a wide range of income levels and interests, so you will be meeting lots of people from all over, and it is never dull. Especially in the summer months, the days start earlier to prepare breakfast, so it might be tough for a night owl, as one job that you will always have is to help us cook breakfast.
We had a young lady from Germany stay with us this past summer for 3 weeks under a similar arrangement, not through workaway. I would be happy to give you her name as a reference, she speaks English pretty well.
We are currently looking for someone from Mid-July to the middle or end of October.
