Description
This is a very beautiful and photogenic area with historic castles and mountain ranges famed for views and wildlife. I live in a very old small traditional croft cottage which needs a lot of work done on it. There is some garden and .5 acre hill land to reclaim for sheds and vegetables. I particularly need help to erect a shed / summerhouse, right now.
The cottage is on the hillside above Loch Duich near Eilean Donan castle of 'Highlander' fame, 20km from Kyle of Lochalsh, 100km from the nearest city, Inverness. 800 people live in a 8km radius, most in tiny villages. As there are few of us we get on well and here, for many, the best things really are free, hillwalking, visiting friends, sightseeing and more. This placement would suit people interested in scenery, nature, quiet pursuits - I have wi fi internet and a lot of books for you to read!
However, although I have electricity, tap water, shower, and a small shop nearby, if you want central heating at the flip of a switch and all modern conveniences, this is not the place for you!
I have 2 dogs, an old labrador and a (mostly retired) sheepdog. Sometimes I help with neighbours animals.

To make a garden here you have to battle rock, thorn bushes, bracken, roots - clearing hill land. We are used to it but weeding and planting and the things you might expect to do in a town garden or an already landscaped one are just a tiny part of the work!
Currently, weather permitting. there is collecting and cutting firewood, tidying, digging, and clearing bush and hill-land, outside the house, a shed foundation to be finished and the shed and wind-break walls to go up. Inside, there is some flat pack furniture to assemble and work to be done on old furniture.
I can still accommodate helpers with building, joinery, plumbing, tree-cutting, manual labour experience but probably already have all the help I need for general chores and housework until spring 2012. Looking for help in exchange for good food and a comfortable bed - in a house that is old fashioned and cluttered!

Mary has a heart of gold and she is very sweet and generous. She will make you feel very welcome from the minute you step inside her home.
Her house needs a lot of work so it is not for the frail. It reminds me of a very cluttered second hand shop. The bedroom for the guest is clear of clutter and clean as is the bathroom.
One thing I will more

Thank you, Regina, you were a great volunteer!
Despite suffering from her allergies, Regina led much of the work outdoors and initiated a rock and earth clearing task that I hesitated to ask anyone to tackle. Thank you for that and the marvellous results. You were an inspiring team person, always pulling over your weight!

Kayle and Rashika are everything they say they are and more.
This was a difficult placement at the time. The snow cover had lain from December to April, something we are quite unused to here at sea level and a gale had destroyed sheds. Also in the month prior to their arrival I had become very ill and had to abandon the house, returning to more

This is a beautiful place and we had a fantastic time there. We really got to see and know the area. Mhairi was easy-going, took us for lovely walks and introduced us to the locals.
The hours were flexible and Mhairi was always willing to take us sightseeing.
Having said this, we felt that we could not contribute as much as we would have liked more

Thank you Marcin, for your succinct and positive feedback.
In my feedback to you, you are missing one smiley not because of any fault but because of uncertainties!
You came for a 'look-see', and although seeming uncertain as to how you would fit in and what you could do, were pleasant, flexible and helpful at all times. Thank you for all your more

Mhairi was my first workaway experience and I couldn't have asked for a better time. She was already taking someone in but responded to my response the same day I put it out. She provided a great place to stay and other than showing the other guest and myself around the Isle of Skye, and providing a warm bed for not much work, she cooks great more
Thank you Clint for such nice feedback and for all your help and cheerful good nature while you were here. Clint stayed with me for only a few days at the beginning of his travels. My plans for the two days were already set. Weather and opportunity allowed that we spend time exploring a little in Skye. Clint was welcome to come along in return for more
Mhairi's house is located in a gorgeous area of the Scottish Highlands, and she's helpful at finding the best spots to hike in the vicinity (especially for sunset photos!). If you can put up with the downstairs clutter and you want to see the highlands, this is a great place to go! Thanks, Mhairi, we had a great time! ...and Mary can't find any more
Mary and Jake were great company, very easy going, and willing to tackle all tasks. They were enthusiastic and made the best of the weather and all opportunities offered to them. The time passed quickly and Thank you to both of you for all the stone carrying, path-laying and digging!
It is some time since Estelle stayed with me But she is still remembered for her smile, her constant willingness to work and her care with the animals (and humans!). A considerate and fun person! Thank you!
Michaela, was fun and great company, made friends easily and was conscientious about tasks. Thank you for painting and transforming the bathroom and for carrying all these buckets of earth and stone for the shed foundations. Come back anytime!
I don't recommend going to Mhairi's at all. I didn't enjoy it there. That is my personal advice.
Ana seemed have character and I tried to like that she knew what she wanted but found her demands wearing. Ana seemed to want to be helpful but may not have understood the description in my profile or what I wanted with regard to tasks. As Ana told me at length that she had enjoyed staying in a hostel in Ireland but not her previous homestay - more
Kareem was always willing to be helpful or to occupy himself while waiting for suitable weather for projects. Strong and tough, almost weather resistant (:)!) and ever ready! Open, honest, talkative and good with animals, Kareem is one of the kindest people I have met! Best of luck with your life and projects Kareem! Keep in touch and welcome more
