Travail forestier et de rénovation dans les Pyrénées, France

Description
Hi I was previously a world traveler and adventurer. Now settled in the Pyrenees with a lovely house and farmland (see pix below) I aspire to eco development, the house already is carbon neutral with power supplied by photovoltaic solar panels. We have a lot of land and forest and live at 600metres above sea level. This altitude guarantees 4 seasons, Spring is glorious and begins very early by European standards Summer is guaranteed to be lovely weather without it ever (!) becoming unbearably hot, Autumn is fabulous with all the hardwood leaves of the forests turning the whole area into an artists canvas, Winter we have usually two big dumps of snow between December to late Feb early March there is great skiing (three resorts - approx.one hour away).
We have three horses, a sheep dog (see photo) - she has her own flock to practice on (at present 5 sheep) a super friendly cat. In the recent past we have also kept pigs chickens goats ducks sheep etc etc. We always kill and eat our own livestock personally. Everything here gets a good life (and respectful death).
The reason we have downsized the farm is because we have a 45' sailing ketch moored at the moment in Gibraltar and we have been spending long periods on the boat in a large restoration project (she is wood and an American classic - we sailed her across the Atlantic).
So now the boat is practically finished and we have to get the farm running again.
I have a tractor (massey 70hp) plough harrow etc etc, we have a tracked digger and a dumper, two chainsaws etc etc.
What we were hoping to accomplish this year is to clear a piece of forest about 10 acres in size. We want to bring it back to pasture and mill all the wood we take out.
In addition, we would like to get the veggy garden up and running again and restore a beautiful barn (1840) as the roof has caved in and the stone walls need restoring etc etc.
Where we live abounds in wildlife and birdlife, you can walk ride ski bike anywhere you want, as far as Spain if you want, you will never come across a sign that says "Keep Out - Private Property" like in England (Ugh.)
Life is good here, and in return for good honest work (see note below *) we can offer convivial company and accommodation, food is included as is wine. I am considered to be a good and creative cook (and after saying this now I will have to prove it!) and I like to share cooking with any-one who is interested in learning or who already has skills. I am very happy to pass along my skills to any-one interested in every facet of the project etc.
So give me a ring and lets talk, or send an e-mail with a description of who you are, what you like and perhaps a photo of yourself.
This position is open to all regardless of race, sex, religion, lactose intolerance, age, number of heads etc., Aliens however, need to send me a telepathic response!
We are not smokers but do not object to smoking outside.
Cheers
Barry
PS We speak English and French
PPS We are omnivores but are happy to accommodate veggies if they are also tolerant.

What we were hoping to accomplish this year is to clear a piece of scrubby forest** about 20 acres in size. We want to bring it back to pasture and mill all the wood we take out.
In addition, we would like to get the veggy garden up and running again and restore a beautiful barn (1840) as the roof has caved in and the stone walls need restoring etc etc.
BIG POINT TO MAKE HERE. When you check out the 'Map" on this website to see the location, please look for the Hamlet of GARBET, which is a small satellite of the commune of BENAC. Garbet is where we are, check out the surrounding countryside.
*Note. Flexible working to us doesn't mean working when you wake up, we want reliable people to work with, not wait for! Flexible means that if we (say) agree on 5 hours a day (25hrs), that could be 3 days at 8 hours giving you 4 days off, or it could mean ......etc., but whatever you (we) choose it will be full on and professional. A strong work ethic is important to us. We think that a fulfilled and fit body is a happy body....the mind of course always becomes stronger with a fit and healthy body.
2011 was a great year for us and our Workaway volunteers, we gained some great feedbacks mostly 'excellent' or 'Very good' -We did have a zero however from a one workawayer!! Always has to be one in every pack!
Most of the people who came to us came actually to enjoy the work we were doing. This is the buzz! At any time people could take whatever time off they wanted, planned in advance. We always ran people to the rail station or town and also picked them up again when they returned.
Keeping flexible is the key
(Give the philosophy a rest now ...Ed!) !! OK OK

Last Note. The area surrounding us is in a national park and it is one of the few areas of the world where forestry is increasing. We do not fell trees without considerable thought and planning.

In the light of recent experiences with some 'Workawayers' we are looking for people to stay at least three weeks/one month. Whilst it is difficult to make this commitment and nothing is set in stone, what we don't want is to make a considerable emotional and time investment with some-one only to find out that they are actually 'Couch Surfing' and only staying for a minimum period (one girl stayed just 2 days ) just enough to get them on their way again. So, sorry but NO 'couch surfers' on our project. If you think a month is too long, then look at our feedback. We can't be that bad to live with!!
Thanks, come and have an experience to remember.

All arranged, didn't turn up !!!
I spend a month at their place this summer and though it is in a rural area I enjoyed to settle down and discover this place. The area is next to a big and beautiful forest that are nice to walk in. The visits to the local markets on Fridays made the stay varied and even more interesting. The food I got was really good, I tried things I have more
Dear dear Patrik, first time ever outside of the arctic circle. "Blinded by the light" comes to mind.
Patrik was a true product of Sweden, to have breakfast he wore his ear defenders and protective goggles and at one time he asked me if South America was 'Safe'.
Watch out Britain and America - this is what happens when you take the initiative more

I stayed with the Fryer family for four weeks. It was such a lovely experience I was very sad to leave, but I was so happy to stay with them for those few weeks I couldn’t have asked for anything more. They were very welcoming and have hosted many volunteers, they have an established routine. Barry, Virginia and Audrey really included me in the more
Simran and Rushika, two young women originally from India stayed with us this summer. For us it was like having daughters all over again! Cheeky, lively, lovely, interested in everything, monopolising the bathroom for hours on end, using all the hot water, sullen sometimes, awkward sometimes and living in a parallel universe where time was more
At first it seemed a bit long to spend 2 months in one place, but I quickly discovered how different an experience this was about to become rather then just a vacation. We got along great, we worked great, and definitely ate great...not to mention what I like to call Friday, wine, conversations, personal stories..and more wine, night. I truly more
Anthony came to us for 2 months but I honestly think if University term wasn't starting he would have stayed a lot longer. This young man has all the attributes that makes a great man, he is hard working, tenacious, witty, intelligent, and always gets the job done. Great cook, thoughtful,
generous with his time, we all worked like the team you more

We were Barry and Virginia's very first workaway guests! Right away they welcomed us into their daily lives and routines. They gave us space, but made sure that we felt welcome to share their (wonderful) meals, watch the evening news, discuss a variety of fun and interesting topics, and experience the beautiful region that they call home. We even more
These two young people were our first experience of 'Workaways'. They lived in North- North America and worked regularly in Alaska. In order to make them feel at home we provided them with 2 feet of snow over Christmas (with a Christmas tree we cut down ourselves on our land, of course).
They were so impressed with the snow and the logistical more

We have just spent 5 1/2 weeks with Barry, Virginia and Audrey. Our time here was full, and we were made to feel most welcome during the whole of our stay. We have thoroughly enjoyed this experience, and would recommend to willing workawayers. The work was varied, anything from gardening to building, and we enjoyed it all. We have met some more
From the minute that Craig and Jo arrrived here it was clear they loved life, adventure and new experiences. They both worked tirelessly on whatever tasks they were offered, nothing was too much trouble for them, everything they did was first class.
These two wonderful people are a joy to be with, their positive attitude and co-operative spirit more

My workaway experience from Virginia and Barry's project has been exclusively positive. They made me feel like a part of the familiy, gave me tasks and responsibility even though I had no skills from before (building, brick work, planting, chain sawing, digging+), gave me the most wonderful accomodation imaginable, feeded me with delicious British more
Kristine (Diana the huntress) was simply a delight to be with. She is funny, highly intelligent, open and great to live with. Her contribution was invaluable and we actually want to adopt her !!

I have just completed a fun and knowledge enhancing month with Barry, Virginia and Audrey. I feel I have learnt a lot over the past month, from agriculture work to building work there are plenty of activities to keep you active. No idle hands needed here! I came here with the intention of working hard physically and I have certainly done that. If more
Simon is a willing and intelligent young man who we worked and lived with for over a month. He was always generous with his time and energy. With his good sense of humour and personality we had fun and rewarding times. Come back soon. he and his family will always be welcome at our house.
Alex and Mark came to us in March, they said that after being made redundant they ideally wanted to stay for several months. They clearly wanted to fulfill their dreams and ambitions of learning a wide variety of skills, as per their profiles.
Unfortunately, naivety and immaturity has, I think, led them to a belief that dreams go on. Dreams more

This was our 1st workaway experience (although we have previously volunteered) & unfortunately it didn't work out how we anticipated.
The area is beautiful & if you like the outdoors then it is a lovely place to explore and enjoy. It is just a shame there were other factors which made this experience some what disappointing. The host profile more

Everyone in this household is really nice and full of interesting stories and experiences. The area itself is very beautiful, although it has a feeling of being detached it is close to lots of great things to do. If you enjoy good food, good company and a generally fruitful and relaxed time this is a great place to come and help out two people more
David was a joy to be with, he is intelligent, understands the 'big picture' was helpful and always willing to help and learn.
Whilst the weather was pretty awful during his stay he remained cheerful and interested throughout.
Any-one would consider having David in their house a privilege.
And get him to cook some Mexican dishes, they were more
