Area: Rhône-AlpesWe have limited space available in November This is a lovely chalet in the French Alps set in an idyllic mountain village 6 minutes from the telecabine in St Martin de Belleville that gives access the the vast Les Trois Valleys ski domain. The snow arrives in November, but until then we have lush alpine pastures, sunshine and lots of mountain sports to enjoy! We are set up as a ski chalet, and have great guest accommodation which includes WiFi, satellite TV, games and a DVD library. We are upgrading the accommodation and constructing an apartment at ground level and working on the main chalet to build some additional bedrooms and bathrooms. The venture in France started four years ago born from a love of skiing, the great outdoors and the mountain life. Last October I was able to pack in work to focus on getting the work done on the property there. My wife is planning to join me full time from the UK in October. I have three great grown up kids, my eldest is working an extended ski season in Canada, the other two are travelling and studying. I am 52, I had a good career and am now building a small business in France around tourism - holiday lets with support. It is a down size to do more of what we enjoy in a great place. I love adventure sports, climbing, mountain biking, skiing, swimming, wild places and enjoy travel. While I am happy in my own company I also enjoy meeting people from different countries and backgrounds so workaway looks really helpful. I like cooking healthy food, eating with friends, good coffee! I enjoy building but particularly enjoy joinery work. My wife Janet joins us at the end of October too. I also work really hard, I kind of have to as I have a deadline to get the work done before the snow arrives, normally in November. I mention that as you may need to be self sufficient in the afternoons as most days I will have to carry on working, but I'll help and be as good a host as I can. There will be a nice International group here so you won't be lonely!
Area: OkinawaSix months of the year I live in a small Okinawan fishing and farming village and run a two room guest house with my long time friend Sayori San. We need help with the gardening and the house cleaning and can offer one or two people their own bedroom upstairs. We can help you learn Japanese language and culture. I can take you around the island snorkeling, hiking, biking, shopping, paragliding, surfing, kayaking, eating etc. I hope you are interested! I love company. A note about Rural Okinawan Culture: This community is not a modern urban Japanese community. When I am in residence I must change my behavior and my clothing in order to be accepted and not cause trouble for my hosts. While the independent western woman I am rolls my eyes at such things as wearing the right shaped bra and always covering my crotch such that the outline never shows (as would happen if I were to tuck my shirt into my pants), I adopt an attitude of learning from the culture I am visiting rather than insisting on my right to dress and act in total freedom. If you were to decide to stay with us, there will be an on going conversation about how your actions are perceived by your hosts community. In addition, people under the age of 20 are still considered children, minors, in Japan. You are not allowed to drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes, drive cars, vote or make life decisions such as engagement for marriage until you are 20. Thus, workaway volunteers younger than 20 will find their activities here even more restricted than those older than 20. Having said all of that, Okinawa is really interesting and may very well steal your heart. It is one of the few places in the world where women run the religion as documented in Susan Sered's book "Women of the Sacred Groves: Divine Priestesses of Okinawa" If you have an interest in a society that is fundamentally different than your own, our village is one place where you can observe that difference. It will open your mind. Plus, Okinawa is drop dead gorgeous and the people will treat you like family right after you meet.
