Farmlife in Iceland
Pays: Iceland
Last Activity: 05.16.2012
Description
We are a Dairy farm in the north of Iceland 7 km from Varmahlið.
We have around 60 milking cows in the barn. The female calves stay with us and the males sell to the neighbor for lack of proper room. There are also around 30 horses and 7 of them are riding horses. We also have a dog, two cats and four rabbits.
There are two generations living on the farm in one house but two apartments.

Travail
It is possible to help on the farm during the spring and summertime.
Every day starts with the morning milking at 8 am and ends usually with the evening milking at 9pm for us. “Usually” because you never know what might happen. For example a cow having trouble giving birth, calves checking out the other side of the fence or the harvesting needing to get done for risk of possible rain the next day. All other chores are done between the milking times and depend on time of the year and weather. Chores for example are fieldwork, fencing or fixing other things which break down, horse/foal training, shopping or cleaning.
Main responsibilities will be to take care of the horses/ foaltraining, help with the milking and cuddle the calves. You will need to have riding experience, you will have to be secure in the saddle since I also have young horses but we will train you for milking, and cuddling calves should be in the nature of the human being :-)
You have to be able to stay at least six weeks, since it takes some time to learn the way around the cows and horses.

I spent six weeks at the farm last year and it was a great experience I would recommend for everyone who likes working around animals. The morning and evening milking was very nice work and interesting to learn for someone who only bought milk in the supermarket until then ;) Foal training was a lot of fun.
