Description

Hi,
My name is Brett. I’ve been living in Panama with my wife for about 6 years now. I originally came here to Panama working with a Singapore company in export. I ended up staying to work on various projects. Currently we have just planted several fruit orchards next to the Santa Maria River in the Santa Fe area of Panama. Our main project is located near Santa Catalina. We reside between these two projects in the town of Santiago. My wife, Hiroko, is from Tokyo. I am originally from Memphis Tennessee and have visited over 70 countries in the course of my travels. Panama is now home.

Travail

The work is set in rustic difficult conditions. Here the living conditions can be described as housing but would seem more like camping in the States. The guest worker would be expected to groom and fertilize citrus plants. After a rotational week in the mountains, the guest would be offered a week at the Lago Bay site. The advantage in the mountains is the cooler climate and beautiful river. The advantage at the coast is the nearby tourist town of Santa Catalina (surfing, diving, fishing). Both sites have the usual problems associated with tropical field work…the vegetation and bugs. Work is typically done in jeans and boots with a machete. My wife is asking me to say Rough!

Panama is hot.

Logement

Mountain-River site is a small wooden shack next to a nursery with a loft. You’ll bunk with another volunteer with a simple mattress or hammock (optional). The Beach site is a small concrete shack with a simple mattress or hammock (optional). The mountain has electricity and drinking water but the volunteer would bathe in the river. The Beach has a shower etc. but only electricity with a generator. Food is healthy but basic with gas stoves for cooking. All is extremely basic but clean.

Autres choses...

The guest would be completely immersed in the Spanish language. Although no experience is necessary, orchard farming, landscaping and/or construction is a plus. Both sites are great opportunities to learn about Panamanian culture. There are Panamanian crews at both locations. Permaculture is an option at the mountain location. Suggestions and cultivation experiments are welcome.
