Área: Lazio, very close to Rome (35 min by train) and UmbriaWe live in the Italian countryside in a very traditional way, although we are not a traditional farm. In fact, I am a general practitioner, very often working away from home, and running a bed&breakfast at the house. This means that I need the help of someone guaranteeing continuity in the house, garden, feeding the chickens, goats etc. This also means that I have less time than I would like to be together... and I need someone who can work independently with little guidance. We have two positions to fill: one longer term (at least one month) for assisting in taking care of the house and garden, and a shorter term one for odd jobs in the garden, vegetable patch, etc. We eat healthy food from our vegetable garden and make our own bread and jams. Now we are vegetarian, and on the way to becoming vegan. We use olive oil from our own trees - which is very precious for us! Our philosophy: environment respect, domestic economy, recycling any trash, and gratefulness for what we receive from Nature... From the volunteer we expect: Interest and will to learn. Flexibility to adapt to our lifestyle and desire to be integrated. The person must be able to work independently and on their own initiative. There are many projects and types of work but you will be working on your own a lot of the time. We have had wonderfully rich experiences of meeting young and older people coming from all kinds of cultures. In the case of more volunteers present in the farm we can alternate one full day of active presence with one full day free. The station is 7 km away (from here you can walk less than 1 km to a bus stop, hitchhike or cycle). Daily chores around the kitchen are expected of everyone, even guests, this goes without saying and is not really the 'work' expected in this Workaway. . We have a maid that comes a few days a week so you are not expected to do any serious cleaning, just simple tasks like preparing the kitchen for breakfast, keeping the woodpile stocked from already cut wood (winter), watering plants (summer) and clearing the table after meals. You also need to do 4 hours of work everyday on different projects around the property and hopefully creatively contribute to the progress of the home (this could be completing a specific outdoor project, there is plenty of mending and repair work or creative projects like constructing paths with tile pieces). This task could be any number of things, but importance is placed on leaving your mark on the home and contributing. Also, if you work for a full day, this can be in exchange for a full day to visit one of several attractions or towns nearby (Rome, Assisi, Orvieto, Spoleto, to name a few) Potential workers should keep in mind that this is not a free hostel! You have to be absolutely willing to adapt yourself to the way of life here - with its rules and habits - even if it is not what you are used to. Having a positive attitude is essential in this respect. Please watch this short film to get an idea of my values, as I am not willing to compromise them- look on google Annie Leonard, "story of stuff". You should ask yourself whether or not you find this agreeable before asking to come work here. The importance of this experience is not solely the physical work in exchange for food and a bed, but rather a willingness to learn and build a relationship. Since I very often work away, I like to come back to a nice atmosphere where I can feel really at home! I am really happy for people to "feel at home" here, but I also want them to "feel the home" and really be part of it. Just to give an example, you can not enjoy a drink standing just in front of a plant dying of thirst and not do anything about it...
Área: Langkawi (Kuah)We open a healthy lunch cafe, offer cooking classes and sell healthy products, besides developing our organic farm with vegetable garden, fruit trees and chicken. It is the brainchild of captain Eva, who restored her health with a diet of raw foods while on a 5-year sailing tour around the world. She has long dreamed of creating programmes to help young people lose weight and live a healthy lifestyle. The project is still in its beginning stage and needs much more development and hard work. We are situated in Langkawi, a beautiful island close to the border with Thailand. On the farm we have 2 rooms, one is ideal for a couple and the other one with two beds to share. We also have two large tents (king size double mattress included). The work is mainly on the farm, in the vegetable garden, helping in the kitchen and producing our healthy products. Another project is about sailing cruises, where we need people who have good hospitality, cooking or some sailing skills. When you apply for this project, please mention your interests: are you interested to get involved in the Garden or the boat cruises?
Área: North of the country - a bit remoteTHANKS TO ALL WORKAWAYERS, but we seem to be a popular place here and we are now OK with help until October. Good luck to all.. We always like that our volunteers speak Spanish in order to blend with the staff. We are a 18 room avant-guard eco-lodge located in the mountains of Costa Rica. This is a family-run establishment with one resident manager and approx. 7 to 10 employees in season.
Área: Distrito FederalA is a rural development project, aiming to create self-sufficiency for the project and community surrounding the project thru combination of ecological farming, education and cottage industry. We are part of a non profit spiritual and social service organization, and follow the principles of Neohumanism (which in short is love for all humans, other living beings and animate and inanimate) and PROUT (Progressive Utilization Theory). We practice yoga, meditation, follow a sentient (healthy) lifestyle. Our ecological farming is based on a mixture of permaculture, biodynamics and other alternative means to achieve self-sufficiency. Regularly we have some bio-construction going on as well, developing our place to be a spiritually based community, with social service projects for the locals. The project is run by a yogic nun, Didi , who has dedicated her life to self-realization and service to humanity. She teaches yoga and meditation, works as a missionary, and is lifelong learner. Ivo is our longest staying volunteer and is dedicated developing our farm to self-sufficient place where people of all ages can come and learn about alternative and healthy lifestyle. Usually there are some volunteers around, and a few local workers as well. Also we have 4 dogs, 4 cats, and some native animals around.
Área: Midi PyreneesJeffrey and Michelle Ulbrich are a franco-american couple (both fluent in both languages) living in a restored 13th century millhouse on 4 hectares (10 acres) of land about 100 meters from the Arros River with their dog, cat and two horses. This is extreme rural France. If you like a quiet life with plenty of greenery and practically no neighbors, this is for you. If you need nightlife and excitement, it is not. Which is not to say we don't have a lot of fun and many interesting friends. There are frequent social gatherings and varied activities. The small town of Marciac (pop 1,200) is 5 kilometers away. It has two or three cafes, three or four restaurants, a cinema and a few small shops. There is no public transportation. We are quite happy to lend you our bicycles or give you a lift into town. To come here you would travel to Tarbes where we would meet you at Tarbes train station or Tarbes/Lourdes airport.
