We're a small backpackers hostel overlooking the beautiful Bras d'Or Lakes and surrounded by trees, fresh air and wildlife. We're open each year from May until late October and just down the road from the start of the Cabot Trail. If you enjoy being active, we are close by to hiking, kayaking, biking, swimming and beaches. Workawayers are welcome to help with landscaping, housekeeping, renovations and building projects, website optimization, helping travellers, answering phones etc . We host hundreds of international backpackers each season and invite you to be part of this great place! Late afternoon and night is left for BBQ's, reading in the hammocks, campfires, and music. Please contact at least a few days before as we only have room for 1-2 workawayers at a time and we don't want to disappoint. Time of stay is flexible but I prefer a minimum of 3 days. Special consideration is given to those with carpentry, building and electrical skills as we are hoping to build a couple cabins from recycled barn wood and run by solar power. Talk to you soon!Region: Saskatchewan
Our farm consists of 90 head of cattle - calving is getting close to completed. We have 7 riding horses and 2 ponies (both ponies are needing harness work). The rest of the barnyard population is made up of chickens, ducks, cats, 5 dogs, rabbits, lambs, peacocks and of course our llama Sparky and our two pot belly pigs, Wilbur and Louie. Our farm has been hosting visitors since 2004. We are a family of 4 (daughters ages - 16 and 13yrs) and we encourage our helpers to become a part of our everyday life.Region: Pennsylvania
We are two suburban homesteaders with a tiny backyard flock of laying hens, honey bees, and approximately 2800 square feet of garden space. We're located in the Lehigh Valley of eastern Pennsylvania. Our goal is to produce as much of our own food as possible through organic methods, while demonstrating what degree of production is possible on a residential plot of land by ordinary people with no formal training in gardening or agriculture. In 2009 we produced over 600 pounds of food from our backyard, and in 2010, over 760 pounds. We expect to continue that trend going forward for the next several years. Since we grow for our own consumption and not for market, ours is very much a polyculture site. We have fruit trees and several types of perennial berries, a large garden of annual vegetables, and many culinary and medicinal herbs. Other interests include light DIY/construction work to address on-site needs, permaculture, herbal medicine (we're still very much beginners), various methods of food preservation, dumpster diving for construction materials, local foods, Transition, ethical consumption, and all aspects of sustainability. We look forward to learning more about the world, other cultures, and many areas of expertise from our volunteers. Plans for 2012 include the planting of a living fence to replace our old wooden one, installation of rain barrels for passive irrigation, as well as a tiny frog pond in the middle of the main garden. We'll also plant more perennial food crops, cook more meals with our solar oven, raise a few chickens and turkeys for the table, and learn to extend the growing season with our new hoop house. Finally, we'll experiment with the cultivation of Black Soldier Fly larvae for poultry feed.Region: North Calais
I'm English and my partner, David, is French. We live on a working dairy farm that has been in his family for 100 years....but cows have taken priority over DIY in the house!! His parents live next door and this is a sleepy village, no bar or local raves here (not that i know of anyway!) We have lived here together for the last year and there is still a huge amount of work to be done in the house and the garden, progress is slow, as I said, the cows come first. There is always someone coming or going. The farm is located in the centre of the village and during the summer there are several local French village fetes/BBq's etc etc. I myself come from a more London background but I now prefer this gentler way of life. I am looking for some one or a couple who can muck in and go with the flow of what ever needs doing around the house and garden. This is an old house that has been neglected and I am on as much of a learning curve as anybody!Region: Throgano
In a rare beauty as part of Greece is located. The peaceful character of Greek race our horses waiting in the middle of a verdant valley of centenarian oaks and olives. The farm is just 800 meters from the beach. With us you will have the option to experience emotions and unusual beauty that will remain memorable in the company of one of the best friends of man's horse
