I am inspired by medicinal plants and fermentation. I also love being around children and animals. Art, music, communication, and health are all important to me. Being immersed in different cultures and places excites me. I am looking forward to learning all I can and growing as a person.

Quais são suas habilidades?
I have worked on a variety of vegetable farms over the past 6 years in Wisconsin, Hawaii, and Mexico. I also have two years of experience managing my own 1/8 acre of medicinal herbs. Through these experiences I feel confident from start to finish in farming - planting seeds, preparing the field, planting, irrigation, mulching, harvesting, processing, and retail. I can identify many medicinal plants and forage as much as I can. I have knowledge of permaculture and a degree in Sustainable Food and Nutrition. I started my own herb business and work as a Cooperative Manager at a grocery Coop so I also have an understanding of how to run a business. I work in Human Resources at the grocery Coop, which has taught me how to handle sensitive matters with direct communication. I value my mental and physical health, I am independent, kind, and genuine. Children and animals make me happy.

Julia was a pleasure to have join our project on Maui. She was very attuned to the garden and made some wonderful herb teas. I stayed with Curt and Linda for three weeks this past March. What a wonderful experience! But before I get to that, two things I think everyone who applies here needs to know:

-Cleaning cat litter is a daily task. Also, the cats poop in the home/on the furniture almost daily, and cleaning this will also be your job.
-The hosts is quite… read more conservative politically - for example, there were antivax and transphobic remarks made at the dinner table at times which was uncomfortable to me as a more liberal person.

These were my two biggest challenges in working here, so please consider if you can handle them before applying. If you can handle these things, you will have an amazing stay. Curt and Linda are both incredibly generous and knowledgeable people. I loved witnessing all the homestead-y things Curt does, from making delicious cheese and yogurt out of the milk from his cows, to growing mushrooms and vegetables. Linda was always kind and did her best to make me feel comfortable, and encouraged me to explore the island. And of course. she is so passionate about rescuing and caring for over 200 cats. It was heartwarming to see.

There is a little community here of renters and workawayers and it was so fun to have weekly dinners with the whole group. I would suggest renting a car, and splitting the cost with other workawayers if able. That is the best way to see the island. And with only 25hrs/week, there is plenty of time for exploring. Other than feeding/watering cats and cleaning their stations, the work consisted of landscaping/house projects like trimming hedges, weed whacking, and painting the house. Even though I had little experience with these things, it was easy to learn. If you notice a specific project that interests you, Curt and Linda are pretty open to letting you explore that. For example, I helped Linda schedule future workawayers and added to the herb garden.

I really liked the location of the sanctuary, it was on a more wet side of the island but about a 15min drive from beautiful beaches. The property itself is also beautiful - I had an amazing time harvesting and preserving the various fruit and herbs that were growing there. It was so fun to see all the cats living their best lives, and I was very tempted to take a few home. Overall, I'm very grateful for my time at the cat sanctuary and hope to visit again someday.
